the 'cylinder thing' behind the battery probably part of the a/c system (its called the reservoir i think). shocking it with the battery cable (i assume you touched it with the ground while the postive end was still connected) is unlikely to damage it.
are you currently experiencing a problem? or just worried? -

It's your accumulator/drier, part of your AC system. I think pretty much all of us have "shocked" it at some point, don't be worried about it.
