How do you guys flush your engine??

I hear a lot of talk about people flushing their engins/radiators like 5 times in a row because they have the orange coolant. How do you guys flush your engine at home???

you fill your radiator with water and turn you engine on for alittle while with the drain plug open and just let the hose run while it drains. do this as many times as you want until nothing but water comes out.

Don't mean to bring this back from the dead (it's not THAT old ;) ) but I've got nothing but water coming out but it won't completely drain for some reason! I even have the car on a level surface and it barely drips! So now I have a radiator full of water and no room to add any dex-cool!! Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

stick a hose in there and let it run...full power!! ...the dex-cool has a tendency to develop a lot of sedement so it takes a bit to get it all out...have fun! [img]smile.gif[/img]

You drain it 5 times, to make SURE all the orange, and/or sludge is out of the engine. If you play in the mud ALL day lone, do you just wash your hair once? Same concept. [img]graemlins/rofl.gif[/img]

when i flushed mine, i also took the resivour out from under the battery and washed it seperate

So I'm guessing with all this fluid running through the engine you guys must be letting it pour out onto the ground right? Cuz you'd need a hell of a lot of empty containers to store all that dex-cool...

One thing I noticed is the damn radiator cap itself is a ***** to get off! I have no room to get my hand around it to push down and turn cuz of the freakin AC unit and stuff surrounds it.

Oh, and now that I've flushed and refilled my system my damn temperature gauge doesn't work :(

I should have just taken it to a shop!

Note: I did swap in a 160* Themostat when I flushed the coolant, but why would that make the temp gauge mess up?

Is the gauge at the bottom and not moving? If so, it may be working fine. You put a lower thermo in, and the coolant isn't getting hot enough to register on the gauge anymore.

You have to remember, our temperature hands only go down to 160 and if you installed a 160* thermo then it wont really get hot enough to register on the gauge. The only way to really tell is to leave your engine running, turn off the heater and A/C because the A/C runs the cooling fans and in this case that wouldnt be good. Keep the engine running but just let it idle and not move, (best to do this when your at home or something similar where you wont be moving.) Just let the car run and see if the gauge eventually moves. If it doesnt then you can positive that something isnt kosher somewhere because if you just let it sit still and run, the thermo will still open at 160* but with no air moving through the radiator then there will not be any cooling of the water so to speak. Hense why I said to turn off the A/C because that runs the cooling fans which cools the water.
