  • Security light, car wont start. UPDATED!! help

Ok, i started my car this morning and drove around perfect for a few hours. came home and went to leave for church and as soon as it started my car stalled. i fired it up again and is stumbled a little. usually i will rev it till the stumbles go away and everything is just fine. then it stalled again.

i tried to start it and it wouldnt even turn over or act like it would start. I pulled the key out and the security light stays on and has been on for a few days. what is the security light telling me. im doing a search as i type, but just want extra feedback and tips to do as i need to drive from the peninsula to portland in a few hours. please reply quickly all

    BTW Happy Easter

when mine came on, it wouldnt start because the wires coming out of the ignition lock cylinder broke which seems to be common. i put the appropriate resistor into the system and it works great ever since. search for ignition lock cylinder

Try unplugging your battery leave it like that for a few minutes, then plug it back in.

I stopped in a parking lot for a few minutes to make a phone call, and when I went to start it that security light was on. Basically you just got to reset the computer, and it forgets the security thing was ever on.

this isnt something to just try to avoid. this security thing will leave you stranded if you dont fix it or rig it

make sure that little chip in your ignition key isnt damaged....if it is...your car will not start.

Same thing happened to mine, those wires ripped out of the lock cylinder. I had it replaced at the dealer, sucked, but if it lasts another 105k, I'll be plenty happy. If you go to a dealer, be prepared to drop 350 bucks total...and if you don't jerry rig it with a resistor, this is what you will have to do.

welp, my car seems to be doing fine now. i have my spare camaro key with me just in case but hope i dont need to use it.

thanks for the replys all, and i did a search and found several posts of which i read for an hour or so. i think i will just hope and pray it continues to work. my car sometimes has problems but seems to fix itself. kinda

              anyway thanks again,

BTW i cant afford $350 and since i have a the free resources to bum a few electrical supplies i could do the resistor thing for free, although i would rather not right now.

I have had the same problem 2 or 3 times with my '98 Camaro. I would try to start the car and the security light would come on and the starter would not turn. I waited a few minutes and it solved the problem. It has not happened for almost a year, so whatever caused my security light to come on has fixed itself.

ok, it now happens every third or fourth time i drive it.

im going to see if my spare key works any better.

btw the SES light comes on every once in a while and goes away. my car is getting up in the miles so its not too much worth putting the money i dont have into it.

This may sound wierd but when that used to happen to me like 2x a day. So one day i just took my ignition key and cleaned it with soap and a toothbrush (I had a spare just in case). Cleaned it and dried it "completely" and it never happened again. This was a year ago and the whole cleaning process didn't damage the key at all.

I have used my spare key now for about two days and it seems to work fine. I checked the resistance in both keys and one read 0.883 K Ohms and the other read 0.884 K Ohms.

That is pretty dang close if were talking about almost 900 Ohms. I dont know where someone got 4.6K ohms of resistance, but thats not what my keys read obviously. After a few more days I will try my previous key and see if it acts up again.

                        There's 15 different values available. Your target value is 887 Ω. ;)

No, that won't matter. If something is broken, it's probably those wires that connect to the lock cylinder. As you know, they seem to go out alot.

mmmm. i dont want to work on my steering column, i dont i dont i dont and you cant make me waaaaaa.

you got a wiring diagram of a steering column or a how to link that someone has posted?

I hate disassembling steering columns, you always have extra parts to sell on ebay when your done.
