ok, my car did the whole not starting thing again and after two minutes it started up. with the key im using now it the security light on less and the car doesnt do the non start thing as often, but it is still a used and old key.
do you think i should get a new key and go from there?
i hate spending money on what i dont know will bix the problem, but $25 or so is worth the possiblility of not taking a journey through my steering column.

OK guys. you know how if your car wont start you wait about two minutes and you can start it? well...if i hold the key while driving in a certain position(you know how it can kind of be pushed in) well i held it there for about two minutes while driving and my SECURITY light would turn off. it works every time i do it. so i think it is something in my ignition switch like someone said.
a "how to" would be nice to have if anyone has fixed that problem before. i will do research on it in my manual later. thanks

i got stuck in the rain one day day because of that light. i asked my boss about it and he said it is one of two things either the resistor in the key was read wrong or the ignition cylinder is bad. and since i work at a gm dealership i kinda think he knows what he is saying. the light hasnt come on again so i think the key was just wet and read wrong.

i have two different keys i have used. i used my new spare about 1.5 years ago so that way i could have a not so worn out spare. both make the security light come on and both make the car not start sometimes.
i really dont think it is the key. although iwill get a new one before i tear into my steering column.
i think it is in the cylinder. anyone have any idea if putting an 887 resister tapped into the line would fix it or will I HAVE to get the new cylinder????

i went ahead and priced out a ignition cylinder it list for arround sixty bucks. although it is 55 if you have a standard. a new key is 31.07 plus tax.
these are list prices here in mississippi. they may vary from state to state but i wouldnt think by to much
