• EGR Valve

Hi everybody, I just got a '99 Camaro about 3 weeks ago. Everything was going great with it until one day last week my check engine light came on. I took it to the auto store and they told me that it was the EGR valve, it either has a bad connection or needs to be replaced. My car runs fine even when the light came on, anyways they showed me a pic of the EGR valve and I found it on my car and just pushed on it and viola the light went off. I asked the guy what the EGR valve does and he said..."you know, EGR stuff"..lol I said you don't have a clue do you? He said "NOPE"....so my ? is what does it do? My engine light comes on a couple times a week and I have to push on it and it goes off???
Thanks,
Josie

There's two bolts on it, make sure it's tight, if it is tight then prepare to replace it because it's not uncommon. It's a $100 part but basically what it does is use the unburnt fuels from the exhaust to feed into the engine to burn again giving you better performance and gas milage. It also helps the car warm up while it's cold to opperating temperatures. without it because your car is tuned for it... you'll have a hard time starting the car, get crappy gas milage and some studdering, misfires and it might also throw off your O2 sensors because they'll be getting more exhaust than they normally get...

Slight nit - It's not using unburnt fuel in the exhaust to improve performance and efficiency. The recirculated exhaust gases lowers peak combustion temps a bit, reducing NOx. If anything, it costs a bit of power by replacing air/fuel mix in the cylinder.

If it's stuck open, you'll get a rough idle as the open valve acts like a vacuum leak. If it's stuck closed, you might get knock or ping at times from the higher combustion temperatures.
