  • Weird problem...Alternator I THINK (Weird)

    Ok, recently i went thru a puddle and my car freaked out, voltage dropped, abs inop, power steering went.

    Anyways, next day, it drives fine except for a squeak. Which I was assuming was the wet belt. So i went and bought belt dressing. Shut the squeaking RIGHT up.

    Now...I notice I have a whine from the engine, it varies with my RPMs. Sounds like a supercharger. A guy actually asked me if i had one. I was like....no.

    Anyways..I open up the bay to see what it is. Pretty sure it is the alternator, BUT. I noticed that the pulley below the alt. stops at for a couple seconds. WTF.

    is it possible i put too much belt dressing on? It lubracaited it too much and causes it to slip and stop spinning?

    Should I just replace the belt and alt?

    Thats the A/C compressor. It's ok.

        Check your power steering pump. They tend to whine when going out. While the engine is running, remove the PS resevoir cap. If the fluid is a milky color or if it looks like it's boiling, chances are that your PS pump is shot. They are not very expensive and are very simple to change.

          What's the volt meter reading on the dash - if your well above 13 V with the engine running, I wouldn't sweat it.

            In addition to viper's comment, one of my alternators whined as it was going out. When I say "one of my alternators" that means I'm on my fifth one. Yup, I upgraded to a hi-output this last time and it's outlasted all the others. back to the point, if the bearings go out, your alt. will whine, too. Check your gauges. If they check out, it's probably something else.

                my alt is brand new and whines like a sc i think its awesome lol scares pple ( another v6er i know knew what it was and said " so your alt whines like a sc also lol " ) mine always reads above 12 so im not worryd before it read like 10 and some times down in the yellow
