The most common cause of cruise control failure in GM cars is a loose or cracked vacuum line.

Start tracing the lines from the cruise trottle control assembly to the vacuum resevoir. GM uses some thin, brittle, spaghetti vacuum line, and it is easily crushed or destroyed by heat. You can replace it with regular rubber line if you can salvage the fittings.

If the line to the resevoir is good, then check the line from the resevoir back to the engine. An indication that this line is bad is that the climate control panels that redirect air too the vents in the cab do not open or close all the way, making the climate control system seem to be in permanent "defrost" or "heater" mode with respect to where air comes out of the dashboard.

There is a cruise control fuse also. I would check that first. Our cruise control boxes are electronically controlled....I don't know what the vacuum lines would have to do with it.

My bad - I was going with what I know about other GM products - didn't bother to go check the Firebird in the driveway.

Just ignore me and I will slink away in silence... :D
