  • squeeling sound in engine

dunno where exactly it's coming from, but there is a really high pitched squeeling noise coming from under my hood. sound like a leak somewhere--but there are no leaks, i've look everywhere. it seems to be the strongest sounding right around the throttle body. any help or suggestions would be great. thx a lot.

    Possibly a belt?

actually, i noticed my belt is offsetted a little on the pulley underneath the alternator (not sure which pulley this is) but i know that for a while it was like this, it fixed itself, and now it's back the same way. maybe 1 mm off of the pully that it's supposed to be.

do you think this is it?

how do i go about fixing this? is replacement of the pulley and/or belt necessary?

99% of the time if you hear a squealing noise then its a belt. I cant think of anything else that would make that noise.

You could remove the belt and hand turn all of the accessories to see if they feel smooth and and quiet. You might also start the engine for a few seconds to see if the noise is still there. Not long though, your water pump won't be working. Might as well have a new belt handy to put back on when you're done.

i ran it without the belt--didn't hear a squeak.

i ran it with a new belt, heard a very, very minor squeak but i think it's the tensioner pulley because the other belt had been sitting offsetted on there for a while and the pulley got a little worn down. it's either that pulley or it's the alternator pulley. either way, both look fine and i don't think a little squeak out of them is a big deal. do you guys?

btw, the new belt doesn't come off of that pulley like the old one did.

Try some belt dressing. It works wonders.
