  • Plug Wires

I've called just about every chevy dealer in Colorado about the spark plug wire recall and not one of them wanted the TSB number. They all asked for my VIN and said my car wasn't included in the recall.

So now I've decided screw the dealer and I'm going to change them myself. I know it's a total pain and you should get the front two from top and the rest from bottom. I have still yet to even see my spark plugs but I haven't looked all that hard.

What plug wires would you all recomend. Not to expensive but better than OEM. And since I'm already going through this my guess would be to change the plugs too. So which plugs would you suggest. Any extra tips on changing these would help.

I use accel Extreme 9000 wires and NGK TR6's. If you are naturally apsirated I would recommend some BOSCH PLATINUM +4's for plugs and if you want cheaper but better than stock wires get some Taylor Spiro Wires. Also NGK TR55's are good plugs.

Somebody correct me if Im wrong, but I thought that the recall was only the 96-97 L36 emgines. I know that Ive never heard of the 98+ being included in that TSB.
And on top of that there, they will only replace your wires if they are failing. They wont just replace them becouse you say that you want them replaced...They need to be defective first in order to get them R2.

Also, it's not that big of a deal, why replace the wire with the same, stock wires? Spend a little bit of dough, and get yourself some good ones.
BTW: The AC Delco rapidfires are/seem to be pretty happy in our engines as well!! :D

the 98s were included in the recall, but the wires have to be defective to have them switched out.

they don't manufacture ac delco rapidfires or from what i understand ac delco gold anymore.

when i went shopping a few months ago for my plug/wire change. all the chains (autozone, advanced, pepboys) said that they have been discontinued.

In any event...I used Bosch Plat II and Accel wires

I heard the platinum plugs are worthelss in our cars.
Just get some AutoLite plugs if you are going to replace the plugs, and any of the wires will work fine. It all depends on what you want to spend, but there is nothing wrong with AC Delco wires. I think the MSD wires are the best though.

Could someone give me a little more info on this plug recall. I had to have my wires changed out about 6 months ago, and they charged me an arm and a leg. If there was a recall, I'd like to see if they'd give me some of my money back. Thanks for the help

Well I read that the recall was for 96-98 Camaros that had defective spark plug wires. You can't get the service done unless they are defective (causing misfiring). The warranty extends to 7 years or 70,000 miles (whichever comes first) from the original manufactured date of the vehicle regardless of ownership.

So if you fit into those categories, then it looks like you're in for a reimbursement hehe.

Do you know where I could find the recall in writing? Cause I don't think they'll give me any money back unless I have a copy of the recall. I've got all my reciepts, though. I just want to be prepared when I have to start arguing with the stupid dealership.

Hehe, yea I know...being prepared is always a good thing.

                    As posted by r&ksport:

"Here's a quote from my copy of the letter:
                    'Condition:

This letter is intended to make you aware that some 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998 Chevrolet Camaro model vehicles, equipped with a 3.8L V6 engine, may experiment driveablitily complaints, such as rough idle, misfire and/or illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL), requiring the replacement of spark plug wires. These conditions may be due to a cracked spark plug boots, connector terminals corrosion or unseated terminals.

                    Action:

To address the above mentioned condition, General Motors is providing owners with special warranty coverage. If this condition occours on your 1995, 1996, 1997, or 1998 Chevrolet Camaro or Pontiac Firebird within 7 years of the date your vehicle was originally placed in service or 70,000 miles, whichever occurs first, the condition will be repaired for you at no charge. Other conditions that may cause a similar or different driveability complaints, or cause a Malfuction Indicator Light illumination, that are not a result of the spark plug wire failure are not covered by this special policy. Any repairs that would be necessary due to other conditions would be your responsibility, if you elect to have your dealer provide the service.'"

Also have your receipt ready. And if they give you cr@p about not wanting to reimburse you for labor charges, give it right back to them because there ARE NO labor charges when anything is repaired under warranty. :D
