• Getting keys copied... $80??

Did a search but came up empty

I was having something fixed at the dealership a few weeks ago and I asked how much it would cost to have the main key copied and he said around $80 because the key has a special security thing on it? Is this true or ?

Do I have to go to the dealer to have one made? I have a 96 Firebird

Yes its expensive, but not that expensive.

Usually the ign key is ~$25.

The door key you can have done anywhere for a buck.

ya, i had mine duplicated. no where near that much. The chip in our key is like one of ten(or so) so they just have to match it up and then cut the key. Maybe he thought you wanted a key fob too? Those can be upwards of $80

getting a key copied cost me I think $27 total,

As for reoding your ignition lock cylinder, I had mine replace for like $360.

The keys are ridiculous for what it is. Paying $45 (what I payed) for a key with a resistor in it is crazy. I considered bypassing the VATS but thought it wouldn't exactly be a good selling point.

Ebay has blanks with the resistors....just be sure which you need....they are fairly cheap I think. Any locksmith can cut the key for a few bucks.
