• Autozone tried to scan my SES light???

I've had an SES light now for a few weeks. My car almost sounds like it wants to backfire under harder acceleration, like going up steep hills, or just speeding up over 2rpms. Well, I took it to Autozone this morning, and he couldn't get the scanner to even turn on with my car. So there was a new cavalier beside me with someone in it, and he asked him if he can try his scanner in his car. The guy in the cavalier let him, and his car was already running, and it worked. Why wouldn't it work in mine? He plugged the scanner in first, then turned my car on. Does that matter? Is something wrong with my PCM? They scanned it about 6 months ago, and it worked then. Any Ideas? The guy just said, better that that looked at.

Well my first thought was that his scanner was broken until I read the rest. Try bringing your car to another Autozone near you and see if the scanner there can do any good. If not, you'll probably have to get it checked by the dealer.

I doubt you'll need to scan it, the problem is likely your spark plug wires/ignition coil, or is fuel related (fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator). Check for fried wires!

Even if you find the problem without scanning it, I'd definately find out why my computer plug was acting weird. You never know when you are going to need it to find another problem somewhere down the line.

I had exactly the same problem with scanning my car, but the guy said it was because of the fact it was a '94. He said that the new scanners tend to have toruble reading 94-95 for some reason. But if yours is an '97, I'd guss it is probably something else.

As a matter of fact, i tried to have mine scanned for the EXACT same problem you're describing. Mine was a combination of bad plugs and wires, and a clogged EGR Valve/Intake. Hope that helps a bit.

Why would the idiot try to scan a OBD-I car with an OBD-II scanner?

I thought about a fuse also. What fuse is it, just the PCM fuse? Would it be under the hood, or on side of the dash?

Ok, went to yet another Autozone, and the same thing. It didn't work. Well, I get home and start checking all my fuses and find 1 fuse blown. The cigarette lighter/Auxilirary Accessory Wire/DLC-Data Link Connector. Is the plug for to scan the codes the DLC? Which would explain why it wasn't working? Please someone let me know for sure, this way I can go back out there tommorow to get it hopefully scanned for sure? Thank you.

Yes, the Data Link Connector will not work without that fuse. Go back to Twilight Zone and have them try to read the codes now. Also, watch the fuse and see if there's a reason it blow. Fuses don't just go bad, they are persuaded.
