  • intermitent starting problems, maybe my starter?

This has happened 2 times about 4 days apart: I went to start my car and when I put the key in the ignition, all the lights came on like normal, then when I tried to crank it, it lost power and the dash lights dimmed to where you could barely see them, but everything else like radio and headlights still worked. I kept trying to start the car, the second time it clicked once, but didn't crank, then it didn't make any noise at all when I tried to start it. I tried to jump start it off an escort, but nothing happened, then I got one of those power things that have to be plugged in an outlet and it made the battery gauge go almost all of the way up, this time it did start. By the way, both times that this happened, it started the second time that I jump started it.

When it happened the first time, I thought it was my battery, so I switched it, and then it did it again. Autozone checked my battery and alternator which is about 1 month old and said they are ok.

Has anyone had this problem? I need to get this fixed because it always fails at the worst possible time.

Right now I am trying to remove my starter so I can get it checked, but I am stuck on the second bolt. It is really hard to get anything around it. Have any of you removed your starter on a 3.8?

sounds like a weak connection to the battery.. maybe corrosion .. or possibly a bad chasis ground or short in the wiring somewhere.or bad connections somewhere else.

is your car stick? heres why:

if you hear a click from the starter at all, you are getting power, and the starter is prolly just bad.

if there is no click, you may have a few things. corroded terminals on the battery or the starter solonid. or possibly what happened to my car: broken clutch safety switch. its that little switch under the dash that the clutch hits when you depress it. if that switch goes (and they do), just get a new one. its like $8 for the part. go under the dash, and just slide the switch off of its mount. take the plug off the switch, and put a small piece of wire between the terminals of the plug in a "U" shape, essentially conntecing the loop of power. try to start the car then. if it starts right up, thats your problem.

lemme know if that was clear at all.

also could be the stupid *** VATS thing, but the dimming of headlights makes me think otherwise. its prolly the starter.
