  • My car is working way too hard

I've been driving back and forth to college the past week and i hadn't noticed this before.

I have a 95 3.4l automatic and when driving down the interstate at about 80mph i'm at around 3.5k rpm... Not exactly sure on the gear ratio but i would assume its stock since i haven't touched it (including the previous owners). I would think it should be well below 3000.... is that what its suppose to be at or is my car just trying to piss me off like usual?

maybe its not shifting into overdrive?

I don't know 3000 is about what my 93 does at 80, and I know it goes into OD ...

Alright i just got back and it was doing 3500 again.

Is there a difference between shifting into 4th gear and shifting into overdrive?

Btw, I installed a shift kit a couple months ago, i'm not sure if that would have any effect on anything.

i just did some freeway driving, and i checked, at 80, with a 3.23 rear end (stock) you will be at 2400 in over drive.

there is no difference for us A4 guys, for us 4th is overdrive.

what kind of shift kit was it? was it the shifter+ or was it the transgo? if it was the shifter+ you may have screwed up a solonide it the tranny.

if you got the transgo, make sure you have it in D, not 3, if in three you tranny wont use the OD,

know this is not much, but hope it helps

I have a 96 Camaro with the 3.8, and I set cruise at 120 km/h and the tach shows 2100 rpms....I think she works pretty friggin easy...and that is in overdrive of course

it is a transgo shiftkit and i was driving in overdrive, not drive. I'm not exactly sure whats going on... it seems like i switch to a 4th gear but that goes back to my last question... can i switch to 4th gear without overdrive working correctly?

for us a4 guys 4th is overdrive, that is one of the reasons people say that standards are faster they have shorter gears in the tranny, for us auto folk we have 3 gears then the overdrive,

im certin that your tranny inst shifting into od the question is why my best advice would be to take it to a tranny shop

what part of the shiftkit would cause my car to not switch into 4th gear?

(pease say its the servo because i don't want to take the throttle body off again).

edit: valve body not throttle... wasn't paying attention when i made the post.

im not sure...but like i said before, take it to a shop and have them look at it, if your are regularry running at 3.5k you are going to wear out your engine real fast. sorry i coundnt help more

I was just hoping it was something i might be able to fix since i don't have money for transmission work atm.

I'm going to take some of the spacers/change some spring in that servo to see if that changes anything. If that doesn't work i'm going to take it to the transmission shop, i'm not going to take that thing appart again.

Thanks for all of the help everyone.

ps- Everyone who has put in a transgo shiftkit:
I can't remember what its called, but it is in the corner of the valve body (not connected). It has 3 screws to it i belive. Anyway you were suppose to put some stuff in/springs/etc, then put on the plate, put another spring in it and then screw it back up.... but when i did it there was a crazy amount of resistance coming from the springs (had to have someone hold it up while i screwed it in). Would that effect the 4th gear?
