  • Service Engine Soon

I was driving home from work. No unusal beating or anything extrodanary but about haf way back my SERVICE ENGINE SOON light turned on. I noticed no changes and all the guages are showing normal conditions. When I got home like a 5min drive there was a burning smell of something like rubber I guess. Maybe clutch? I have no idea, any suggestions?

Take it to Autozone (or similar) to have it scanned. Most parts stores will scan it for free and give you the code.

Guessing the code is a waste of time. Just have it scanned and it'll tell you what's going on.

You think it could be that I have not had an oil change for almost 5k, or would that trigger a different light?

I don't think that should trigger the check engine light, I don't oiwn a Camaro but most cars have oil soon lights. And 5k between oil changes isn't bad at all, you can drag them out to 6 or 7 pretty safely, but it isn't recommended.

If you have the money to acquire a top of the line OBDII scan tool, go for it. It would be a valuable investment. While I cannot recommend a certain scanner there are lots to choose from. Visit your local auto parts store and ask what they stock within your budget.
You can make your decision from this link http://www.obdii.com/scantool_selection.html

Thanx for that but I don't know if the obdIII would work with our cars???, anyway would the SES light be triggered if my cap on the tank was on incorrectly because it happened to my friend, but he drives a passat. It is 98 so I don't know if our cars are equipped with that type of thing. Mine is a 2000.

P0420 is the extremely common code caused by a high flow cat or a stock cat that is not working like it should. Common fix is an O2 sim.

P1655 is EVAP Purge Solenoid Control Circuit. Something wrong with the EVAP purge control. Could be a fuse, bad wiring, or a bad purge solenoid.

I got it figured out. It was my gas tank cap. It wasn't on tight enough. After I took it off and put it back on it started to work right again the next day. All is cool-appreciate the support.
