• serious problem, might be tranny, PLEASE HELP

2 days ago i started hearing a wine under my hood, and it got a bit louder, thought it was powersteering pump, fluid was low, added some, still wines

driving home from work, got on it a little down the highway, probably 5 miles later im crusing at 80mph and my car shifts to 3rd, and stays there

now my car wont shift to 4th
1st gear is very slow at first, once it gets to like 2-2500 rpm's it smooths out, every gear after that is fine up to 4th

it just wont shift to 4th

it normally shifts to 4th at like 45mph

i put it in neutral at like 50mph, put it back in drive, when it goes into gear its extremely smooth and it goes back into 3rd

please got tell me these arent the first signs of a tranny going bad?

any info would be greatly appreciated!!!

Try some Lucas Transmission fix!..Just ad it to the trans fluid. Ive heard it works wonder. IF that doesnt help the trans may be on its way out.

yea im 99% sure its done, i didnt really listen to it, i went out and baby'd it around and i can hear it, goin up a slight hill, i gave it about less then 1/4th throttle and i started hearing gears grinding, shifts are harder, that whine may be the torqe converter?

im actually surprised it lasted as long as it did

stock tranny on a 99 v6 firebird auto w/ 3.08's, lasted 130k miles, but was beat to death

ok so i thought about it

id rather replace or rebuild the tranny then buy a new car

what should i do?

1. rebuild the auto tranny for my car
2. buy a new or used auto tranny
3. buy a new or used manual tranny and do the conv.

all opinions are appreciated

I once had a twin cam Fiat and had the engine rebuilt and it was worse than when I gave it to the guy. Buy a rebuilt trans. if there
is a problem, its guaranteed....or a new one. Screw the old one.

Yeah go for a new one! if you cant afford it, go with a rebuild. Just make sure to do some research on the shop that rebuilds them. because i know a few people who had their tran's done (on various cars) and their trans went after weeks or a couple months after having it done.

If you are still suspecting an accesory, or something for your whine. Pull you drive belt, and start the car up and see if it still whines...

that will narrow out ac compressor, alternaotr, power steering.

I'd strongly suggest getting your trans rebuilt by a reputable shop, with trained technicians that know what they are doing.

Ask around, and ask a lot of people.

Do you have a race track where you live? Ask someone there, they'll be able to give you some insight on who's good and who to avoid.

Don't go to the "cheapest" place. Keep in mind, a reputable shop needs to make a fair profit to keep the best people, pay the rent etc. You might be able to swing a dicount by paying cash.

I had the trans on my van rebuilt. It was bullet proof, and I paid a fair price.

I hope this helps.

Tranny was rebuilt by a shop in Pensauken, NJ, the name of it was Precision something or another... I went there because i have a friend who works for a VW dealership and they bring cars there non-stop. they did an AWESOME job i cant believe how much better my car feels.

she has 140K on her
it really feels faster then ever, i really never remembered how it was "supposed" to shift, because when i first got my car in high school i did a lot of stupid sh*t in it like neutral drop it all the time.

im really really happy, it feels like it has a little bit of a higher stall now and it shifts really tight and fast.

thanks!!!

I had a 2001 GMC Sonoma, the trans went out in that after 70k miles, i had it rebuilt, paid about 1500 bucks and when i got it back, it shifted so hard you could spill a drink in ur cup holder, so i took it back, they tore it apart, checked everything said it was ok.. and that it was just how a rebuilt tranny does its thing. Im not sayin all tranny's do this but it was terrible.

haha, here's where you hit the proverbial fork in the road: you can get the trans rebuilt or buy a rebuilt one or buy a new one. thing is, if ur gonna buy a new one ya almost might as well spend that little extra and get like a super-tranny to make sure you can never blow it out again... then you decide might as well get the money out of it and soup up the motor to match the tranny, and while ur at it, hey why not gears too, and then.... cars can get to be an addiction REALLY quick haha

naw man, in all seriousness i'm just saying that if you are thinkin about making the lil 3.8 haul some serious a$$ (i.e. become a track car) ya might as well start now cuz the tranny is the 2nd most expensive part on the car next to the motor.
