First I drive the car untill its fully warmed up. Then I let it sit for a little and it cools down. I get in and turn the key, (the temp is at 170 usually when this happens) I start the car, it idles for a split second at 500 and it then revs itself to about 2000(usually in between 1500-2000). What could cause this. The spark plugs, wires and fuel filter are brand new.

Try removing the IAC and cleaning it out, buy a gasket and remove the throttle body and give it a good cleaning. The problem is occurs from a small instant vacuum leak. Make sure that all tubes and hoses are good and installed correctly. The slightest leak will cause that rev until the PCM corrects for it.Previous F-bodies
1.1980Z A3
2.1991Z A4 5.0
3.1994 coupe M5
4.1993 TA A4
5.1998 coupe A4
Currently restoring a 1980Z
and looking to pick up a 1998-2002 M5
