How in-depth are those scanners they have? Can they show things such as knock retard or engine temperature? I have a friend that works there, and I figured I can use the thing to check the effectiveness of my thermostat if it can do it.

No, they will just tell you what codes you are showing with the SES light, and what the number means... and they can delete the codes.. no monitoring or anything like that -
