• violent shaking...PLEASE HELP!

ohk i posted earlier on this board about a bad shaking. well i thought, as did others on this board, that it was the spark plug wires. well i just changed the stock wires and put in some MSD 8mm Helicore Spark Plug wires and it was running really nice yesterday. then i get in my car today after church and boom, the shaking starts back up. now i just had the system flushed, MSD Blaster Coils, MSD 8mm Plug Wires, new spark plugs, a few other things. the entire car was checked out and the EGR/ERG (???) valve was replaced as well because the SES light kept coming on.

now i cannot figure out what is wrong. the shaking starts out when i accelerate then when i get higher in RPMs the shaking calms down and sometimes stops. but the problem with that is that it won't shift gears til i hit about 2900 RPM (unless of course i crawl at snail pace). the shaking feels like its coming from directly below me or maybe even from the rear end of the car.

so...heres a breakdown:
1) body and interior shakes violently at low RPMs (shaking is worse at lower RPMs in higher gears)
2) won't shift until i reach about 2900 RPMs (unless i accelerate extremely slowly)
3) feels like the shaking is coming from either below and slightly in front of me or behind me towards the rear end of the car around the exhaust.
4) strong smell that sort of resembles burning nylon after i shut the engine off and get out of the car...just smells like something burnt or burning

this isn't happening becasue there is some sort of "break in period" is it? maybe something wrong with the cat? could this be transmission problems or maybe something wrong with the rear gears? i had another problem the other day where the car had trouble getting into a gear. after it hit second and started moving into third it downshifted back to second it felt like. it hasn't done that since though. so does anyone have any ideas whats wrong? i really need some help! i am planning on taking it somewhere and getting it checked out again, but i am in college and this is my daily driver and i have no other car so i'm screwed if its in a shop for a few days. please help!

Could be a torn transmission mount....

Is the SES light on? I don't think it would be the cat. Bad cat makes cars feel constipated when it comes to power output. It could be a seried of things. Does your engine sound like it's coughing? Have you looked under the car while it's running, just to check the obvious things.

Sounds like tranny problems or the driveshaft. The stock 2-piece shafts have a center bearing which could be going out. Look for a used steel or better yet aluminum shaft. $25 for a steel or about $100 for an aluminum is a good deal. How long has it been since the transmission fluid was flushed? From the shifting problems you're having I'd get that looked at.

pretty sure its not the plug wires getting burnt because it was doing this before i changed the plug wires too and when i took the stock ones off there was no evidence of them burning. i thought that may have been the problem too but i checked and they weren't burnt or anything.

i was thinking either tranny or maybe even driveshaft as well. the steering wheel has been vibrating very badly since this started so i was considering that the driveshaft may be the problem then the shifting things turned up so the tranny problems came to mind also.

i'm probably gonna get it checked out sometime this week though. but please, if anyone else has any idea what may be wrong please tell me! this is so frustrating especially during school and all.

if you steering wheel is shaking you need an alinment

But he also gets it at idle. It lessens out at higher RPM's...

What happens when you sit and rev the engine? Does the car still shake/worse/less?

i haven't revved it in a few days so i' not sure how it would react to that. but the last time i revved it the shaking got slightly worse then it dissipated when it reached higher RPMs though i think. not too sure. i'll be sure to rev it up and take notice tomorrow.

but earlier tonight when i was driving, the car didn't shake bad at all. nothing like what happened earlier today. then i drove back to the campus and the gears felt like they were slipping again or something. almost like it couldn't decide on a gear. but that didn't last too long though. i just can't figure this out. one minute it does one thing then the next it does something totally different. i'm thinking transmission but i don't know much about this stuff so i'm not making any conclusions.

well....have someone rev it and get under there (not really underneath just incase ;) ) and see if you can tell whats going on. with the car on or off, look for any broken parts like a tranny mount.

i checked the underbody the other day. got a friend to rev the engine and took a peek under the car and didn't see any problems. gonna take another look at it soon to make sure. it has stopped a little bit though. i don't know about any of this stuff but would there be a break-in period for the coils, wires, or spark plugs or anything like that? since everything got flushed and all would it possibly be that the system was just cycling the new stuff? i dunno if that makes sense...just sorting through some thoughts. anyone got any other advice? or should i just take it to a shop?

Even if it is happening less frequently I would still take it to get it checked out.

im just throwing this out there.....

have you checked fuel pressure? maybe the fuel filter is clogged or the fuel pump is going out. when mine went the the T/A it shook really bad like that.

also, maybe the icm?

like i said im just throwing these out there and maybe it'll help maybe not. but from my experience of burnt fuel pump it kind of sounds like that.

current car- 95 Trans am- bolt ons, parked and collecting dust. why? because **** it

check your
- tranny mounts
- see if you exhuast touches the drive shift (the shaking would less at higher rpms because the drive lifts up when it is rotating faster)
-U joints/center bearing
-if you dont find anything maybe change your differencial fluid, if you see shinny metal peices in the old oil switch to a full synthetic

as for the smell i had the same thing when i changed my exhuast and cat

if your tranny is shifting at the wrong time you might try a shift kit and change your fuild but i have no idea about that so ask someone else for that one
K&N air filter, Whisper air lid, magnaflow LT1 cat back, and magnaflow high flow cat, pacesetter headers, silverstars

more to come soon
but for now im out of money
