  • Removing upper intake manifold

    For a 3.4

    I'm having the same oil leak problem described here. I need to remove the upper intake manifold for this job, but in my Haynes manual it says to drain the coolant.

    I hate coolant replacement; do I have to drain the fluid or not?

    Second...is there anything else I should know before I tackle this job? I'm going to replace my upper intake gasket, the oil pump O-ring, and fuel injector O-rings...anything else I am missing?

    intakes, ha, very easy yet time consuming is you've never done one, no you dont need to drain the coolant I never did, a little will spill out and you'll have to bleed the system when your done but thats it. Ive never done one on a camaro but for the grand ams and centuries and such you need to pull the valve covers too. and you'll also need some assembly addhesive (liguid gasket) for 2 little grooves when the intake goes back on. and if its the same as the transverse mounted 3.4's when your taking the rods out remember where the long one goes and where the short one goes. or you'll be starting all over and replacing the heads....good luck.

    oh ya and before you start your engine change your oil to, you dont need to do the filter unless it needs to be done. but just incase of any metal shavings its good to be on the safe side.

    wait I just read your only doing upper...in that case disregard everything I said and no you dont need to drain the coolant.

        If you will be taking off you're lower intake, yes you will have to flush the coolant first. Clean the upper intake while you have it off.
