But honestly if you are looking for performance then get a 3.8L. You get a 40HP start over the 3.4L. Also get the Y-87 performance package, do a search and ye shall find the info. The 3.8L comes with a few 95's and 96+ cars. But if you like it get it.
It's not the cost that is the problem, it is mainly insurance. I am 17, you see...and my parents don't give me help on paying for anything(hell I had to buy the car I have now :( ). They say if I want a new car, then I must buy it myself and keep the insurance paid on it. That is why a 6 (stepping up from a 4 cyl) is good enough for me. Although a Formula or Z or SS or TA would be kickass, I wouldn't be able to afford insurance on it and have some spending money. </font>
Just so you know what your insurence will be like, I was 17 when I got mine. With good student and two other cars on my parents insurance(which helped keep the insurence down) I was paying $135  a month. I am now 19 and last week I had the car changed over into my name and the deductible(sp?) raised to $500. It is now costing me $115 a month. :( Still high but better. Oh yea, I have a clean record.

It's been virtually problem free other than regular maintanence and self-inflicted problems i.e. me tearing something up trying to modify something else.

If I could do it again, I would go for a 96 with the 3.8L. The extra 40 horses is quite noticeable and with some simple and relatively cheap modifications (intake & catback) you can have a pretty quick car.

Yes, 3.4L guys, I said it, I'd rather have bought a 3.8. I still have pride in my lil 3.4 but you just can't argue with 40 more ponies stock!!! :D
Yea, I have had my fun, but now I am looking for a 3.8L to get seroius with.

I haven't called about insurance prices yet, but when I called about a base model 1994 Dodge Stealth, they said it would be $208 a month...

I finally found a 3.8 at a local Saturn dealership. 1997 M5 Bird with 120,691 miles...they want $5995 for it. With T-tops, which is something I really want. I will go check it out today, and see if my car would make a slightly decent trade in.

120k is a lotta many miles. Anything over 100 you should be able to bargain waaay down. Id keep looking for something better to come up if your not in a huge hurry. A 97 with fewer miles might be a good one to look for.

Yeah, I am continuing to look, but this car is in excellent condition. Too bad I can't test drive from a dealership because I am too young...but the guy started it and it sounded like it was all in order.

Nationwide is on my side. Do you live in a large city? I know that makes it go way up. There was a post a few months ago about insurance. I dont know where it was posted. You can search to try and find it. You may find something better.

As far as I know, my dad has had like three tickets in the past like 10 years or so. No wrecks...my thought is, my brother is on high risk insurance, could that be affecting the cost that I pay? He has had three wrecks in the past two years.

Also...I have been told by many people that AllState is a rip off.

When i first got my car (Dec. 2002, 18 yo.) i payed 193 a month. Then the accident i had early december went on record and it jumped up to 318 a month!  now that i am 19 it went down to 277. I make the money to pay it, it is still way to steep for a 6... but i still love my car.

Look for a 99+ with a y87 then you are in good shape.
