  • trouble with DIS-4 on my 3.4

I did a search and couldn't find an answer to my question so i decided to ask everyone. I just got my DIS-4 and CIU's but as i look at my ignition system, it doesn't look like the there's enough clearance to fit the CIU's ont there without everything hitting the Throttle Body? Anybody had that trouble? How do I get around that? Thanks

i took the throttle body cover off and it all fit... but, after it was all connected exactly how the manual said(i checked and rechecked the connections over and over), it didn't work. It was misfiring like mad or wouldn't want to start. I didn't want to follow the instructions as shown on a 3.8 here on the website because i heard the wiring is different. I didn't follow the wiring of someone else's 3.4(a member who had the wiring diagram posted on his website) because the CIU looks different (the wires come out like " :: " instead of like " .... " as mine are). Any suggestions cuz I'm about stumped. Thanks Again

Try one of the suggested wiring schemes. Maybe one will work.

My connections are exactly the same as how Tiago has his setup on his website but it won't work. I showed my old auto shop teacher what was happening and he said it wasn't mis-firing, he said the engine was retarding like crazy. The smell of raw fuel was everywhere. Anyone know what's up?

Did you set the dipswitches correctly? They are the switches on the side of the box. Check your MSD owners manual for the correct settings.

The DIS-4 no matter what the settings doesn't do any retard at idle. I think the lowest you can make it start retarding is 4000 rpm. I had trouble hooking mine up too at 1st cuz I was using the 3.8 scheme but then I wised up and followed the directions that come w/ the CIU's. Try actually doing the voltage measurements on the prongs to find out which is +12 and which is ground on EACH coil. Mine were not consistent as to which was +12 and ground on the right versus left from coil to coil. On two coils I think +12 was on the left prong and then the last coil +12 was on the right prong, or something like that...it was a long time ago...

I checked the voltages and they're the same as you said. Left and middle are using the left prong as positive and the right one is putting out 12V on the right. I still don't know what's wrong though. I have to drive around with the bypass on all the time. i want it working already, but i don't know what to trouble shoot next

So it works fine with the bypass conector on? That means the wiring is ok. That would mean the problem is with the MSD itself. Is this a brand new DIS-4? Maybe you should go ahead and set all of the dip switches to the defalts that are shown in the instructions and see if that does anything, if you havn't done that already.

Punctuation would make things a lot easier.

I checked the instructions and the wiring is correct or else the bypass wouldn't work. All the jumpers are set to factory settings. Everything seems right but i don't know what's up. I bought the system brand new from summit racing. So I guess it should work. One more question to TIAGO: The brown/violet(coil- ch.4) wire should be taped up right? That's how I had it. I tried grounding it but the engine wouldn't even turn over like that. I'm going nucking futs trying to figure this out.

I don't know if this would help but I've always been a fan of good grounds so I gave that purple wire a VERY clean ground. I put a terminal on it and put it under that bolt and the braket where the metal fuel lines are held to the upper intake manifold so that it was up against the clean aluminum and could get a good ground connection. Might work, might not, worth a try. So does everything work fine w/ the bypass plugged in? As in, nothing is wrong w/ your stock coils and ignition modual that the coils are bolted too?

With the bypass in, it works perfectly. The stock ignition and coils work with no problems. When the DIS-4 is hooked up, i hear, what sounds like my intake, sucking air in like when you give the gas pedal a quick mash and you can hear the air being sucked in. I don't hear a little burst of it, i hear going constantly. When I rev it up, it doesn't seem to hesitate (pretty sure it doesn't). It all sounds the same just louder.
