• Increasing Gas MILEAGE?

Hey guys! Was wondering....do any of you guys see an increase in gas mileage with some of the aftermarket parts that you install?

Reason is... dad got an 02 3.8 firebird and wanted to get some things to help out the $2.40 a gallon. Car prolly gets 26-30 mpg on the highway taking it easy on the car.

Called Jegs. They told me a CAI, cat-back and a Hypertech programmer would allow me to see an extra 5 mpg.

Any of your guys see this many mpg with your mods?

Any other ways to increase gas milage?

Thanks guys for your help!

the only mod I have ever heard real board members say they got an increase in mileage from is the MSD dis 4 and most people only report a 2mpg or so increase. Unless you are going through alot of gas (ie high miles per month) I'd say it's proably not enough to offset the cost and headache.
The only surefire mods I know that can give you better mileage is weight reduction and that has to be so extreme to see any difference the car prettymuch becomes useless as an everyday driver.

5 mpg? never gonna happen.
Besides, who is concerned with better gas mileage when they're busy modding their car anyway? Be happy you can get that mpg running 87 octane gas.

The only serious increase I've seen in mileage [and it was kinda temporary] was after changing all my engine fluids to synthetic at the same time. Then my g/f was following me in a Uhaul on a LONG highway trip at 60-65 mph. We were getting a consistent 36mpg or so.

Some mods do increase gas mileage. Basically any mods that make your engine more effiecient such as headers, catback, intake, P&P stuff will increase gas mileage. Not sure by how much but it will. I've noticed a differnce from stock to how I am now. My gas mileage increasing mods are intake, full exhaust, and an aluminum driveshaft.

Anyone use that redline coolant additive, by having your car run a little cooler it will help the effecincy of the engine. You have to remember the Gmen are after all the car companies to get better emissions and fuel mileage. If a little programming of the PCM would change that GM would have done it from the factory.

Although I've never tried that kind of coolant additive, I doubt running the engine 10-15 deg. cooler would help gas mileage [assuming the engine is running at the correct temp.]. The factory t-stat setting was probably selected for fuel mileage reasons too.

When I put headers, catback, and SLP intake on I noticed maybe a 1 mpg increase on the highway. Definitely not worth the money if your looking for gas mileage increases.
If you do alot of city driving switching to a 3.73 or 4.10 gear ratio could help out with the mileage, and performance as well.

There is actually no mod to help save gas mileage. I did a report on this subject and how to save gas is by simple mantience. Keep tires correctly inflated, change oil, change filter, dont speed up then slow down actually drive slower, keep gas cap on and not damaged, drive less then 60, dont use a/c that much or not all. All these can help you save gas and you dont have to spend a dime

Actually, if you keep your windows up, and no A/C you could gain a little bit. Depending on the type of driving you do most (ie. highway = high gearing) you could gain a couple mpg from gears. But its just because your car would be working at lower rpms.

Don't get a supercharger. I found my foot is alot heavier these days, and 93 octane is expensive. But ITS SOOOOO much FUN

heh, the skeptics and critics co-conspired to close it.

i've enjoyed some reasonable gains (3 - 5 mpg increase, with the right concentration, about 2.5oz/10 gal), more than that seemed like no change at all; this while driving the same, yet punching it more when I accelerate.

but after I put in the resistor mod, I saw it go to ****

but I'm still puttin' the 2-propanone in the tank at every fillup, still carrying my grad. cylinder in the stash box in my car. my engine is clean as **** :D

you'd be surprised what you can achieve with the right application of chemistry, a reason why i chose it as a field of study. ;)
