  • K&N oil

Today I cleaned the K&N filter. The instruction's sheet says to spray the oil to the upper face of the filter to allow the oil to get down to the bottom. Do I need to spray from the bottom to the top?

    Re: K&N oil

Spray the oil on the top side only. I spread the pleats a little with my finger while I spray on the oil. You spray just enough to color the filter then let it sit for a bit for the cotton to soak up the oil. If there are any white areas just give them a shot of oil.
If you think you have sprayed on to much, dab it with a paper towel.

and if ur dumb like i am and spray too much and put the thing in and run the car so some oil gets sucked into the engine, spray out ur MAF with some electronics cleaner and DONT touch any of the electronics. otherwise, the car will act weird, like, not wanting to accelerate and then coming out of nowhere with tons of power

Thanks guys. What you said is what I did, just the top. A mechanic told my friend that k&N filter is bad for the engine. I don't think so. If so, how bad may be.

as long as the filter has oil in it, it will trap more dirt than a paper filter.
          How could this be bad?

K&N will flow more air. But there is a tradeoff-- it allows more dirt into the system too. When overoiled it can really f-up the MAF sensor too.

Every study I have ever read, heard or seen has shown that a decent paper air filter will filter the air better and has more dirt holding capacity than the K&N. Is paper more restrictive? Probably. You can't have it both ways...

I plan on keeping my car for a long while. I run a paper filter [Wix right now]. Most dyno comparisons you see show a whole new intake [CAI] vs. the stock paper filter. You rarely see a K&N "drop-in" vs. stock filter comparo. I doubt the HP difference is significant.
