  • car stalling at redlight

ok well my mom has a 00 camaro automatic. it has 74 k miles of MOstly highway driving.

anyways.. i've changed plugs, wires, and cat.

she says that after the car gets hot, and she waits at a redlight, with her foot on the brake.. the car just dies.

she also said it starts right back up after it dies. but its kind of weird. would it be a sensor? like crank sensor or something?

what do you think could cause a car to just stall out while idleing at a redlight?

Just before you go replacing the sensors and stuff, check the air filter and replace the fuel filter (if it's been awhile).
Is she getting any ses lights?

I'm with him, check/replace the air and fuel filter. The only other thing I could think of would be either the torque converter or possibly a clogged cat which I doubt at just 74k miles.

The torque control module maybe on its way out. It tells the torque converter when to unlock. The torque converter may not be unlocking causing a strain on the engine causing it to stall.

ok.. she said when it stalls.. its not a rough stall..

"when im at a redlight, no knowing the car stalled, and the light turns gree.. i feel like an idiot because im mashing the gas and nothing happens.. then people point and laugh as i have to start up my car again."

              thats what she said.

so would the tc locking up create a jolty like stall, or would it be more like a suttle kind of die stall?

Go to a local garage and have them check the fuel pressure. That should settle any problems with the fuel pump.

When it happened to my car it would be a crap shoot. Sometimes it would just stall and other times it would buck like a bronco and then stall. As it had gotten worse, sometimes I had a hard time getting it to start because the converter was still locked. I hope that helps. I never threw a code either when this was happening to me.

My car just started stalling. It has done it three times in the last 2 weeks. All three times ahve been at a stop sign. And all three times, I have accelerated normally (not floored it). You guys are saying it is a problem with my fuel filter? How much do those usually cost?

Honestly, it sounds like her fuel pump is going out if all of the above has been done. My girlfriends trans am is doing the same thing right now when its idling at a red light.

Hey, it could possibly be the Crankshaft Position Sensor. Take it into a mechanic and have them check the car with a Tech 2 tool.

I had the same problem. My sensor was gummed up. After the car heated up it would just die at idle. If I let it sit for a few seconds (20-30) it would start right up fine. It got really bad at one point and just dies while I was driving along at 50mph. Check up on it, there's a few webisites about this.
