  • Break In Period?

So, guys, what would you say is the "break in" period for a cam/valve spring/retainer/pushrod/header install?

How about for a rear end install (3.73s/Zexel Torsen from stock 3.08s/open differential)?

And, finally, for a shift kit?

How many miles and/or how many [hours] days/weeks?

for a gear install i read a guide where he said to leave the rear end up in the air and just let it go in drive for 10 mins. to heat up and its done, let it cool off of course

For a cam that uses conventional lifters (not roller type) make sure that for the 1st engine start the RPM is kept above 1600 rpm untill full engine operating temperature is reached and then anouther 10 min. Shut down engine, change oil (to remove all the assembly lube that you used at installation). Then your good to go.

Does this apply to roller cams as well??

Start it up and let it idle until you get oil pressure back.
Keep it parked and rev it only a little (if needed) until the lifters pump up and quit making noise.

You don't have to but for the next 100 miles or so I would take it easy but keep the rpm range varied (don't just drive at 3000RPM on the freeway.) Just in case something goes wrong you don't want to be blasting down the drag strip or something.

              Good to go.

A combination of all these responses and I'll be good.

I'll start 'er up, let her idle a few seconds to get the oil running through, and then idle it at 2000 for about 15 mins, then end it with a few revs. :) And I'll keep it easy the first 100 miles.

                  Thanks guys.

I am pretty sure that is something you might do for a flat tappet car, not a roller lifter car. You really don't need anything.
It is ALWAYS smart to let the oil get flowing though.
