  • 160º Thermostat Question !! Updated

Before I installed the thermostat in my car the temperature would go all the way up to 210º, now after the 160º thermostat and the HPP3 the temperature gauge shows around 200º. is this normal? shouldn't the temperature stay around 175º? Am I missing something here?
    Thanks for you help.

I do a lot of driving on the freeway and still the temperature goes up all the way to 200º. Any other suggestion to what may be causing this?
      Thanks

Have you ever cleaned out the fins on your radiator? Dirt, leaves, trash, etc get in there too and clog up the airflow. Either a air hose or hard stream of water should do it. Spray directly into the radiator from both angles (front & back). Make sure the radiator isn't hot if you're spraying with water.
Also, check your airdam under the car. It brings in air to cool the rad. Check to see if it's broke, cracked, etc.

Mine wont touch the halfway mark (I'm at work, so I can't see what temp that is) It normaly sits right blow the first notch, and in heavy traffic slightly above it.

so, it should be at around 175º. That means that there is something wrong with my car because the temperature in my car never goes below 200º even when I'm driving in the freeway (usually at 90 mph).
I know before the thermostat my car used to run at 210º so I've already gotten a 10º drop from the installation of the thermostat but I was expecting something more like a 35º-40º drop in the temperature.
                Any other info?
                Thanks

When installing a thermostat, people often don't realize that you also need to change your fan timing for your radiator. If you put a 160* thermostat, it is only going to keep the fluid running all the time because the temperature won't drop. You should also change your radiator fans to turn on at around the same temperature as the thermostat (or something like that). This is the reason i don't mess around with my thermostat, because i dont have the programming to change my fan timing, that way it is kind of only being half used.

Someone with more knowledge should chime in here.. i know people understand what i am trying to say. sorry for being a little confusing.

NO, I didn't bleed the cooling system. Do you think that would be a problem? I don't even know how to do that.

Also, 95DGcamaro. I have the HPP3 so I reprogrammed the computer also with the 160º thermostat option.

also check your coolant level lol
i know it sounds simple, but if u are low, it will cause your engine to run hotter than normal

there is a little bleeder at the top of the thermostat housing to bleed out any air. check that.
