• Overheating Oh My!

A little background:
For a while car has been leaking coolant, not that I can see or really smell, but after a couple weeks the car will start overheating and I have to refill with coolant. I also put in some Bars leak product hoping that would help.

Today:
Wad riving and all of a sudden car gets super hot so i pull over, the radiator cap is blow off and their is coolant all over the battery and surrounding areas. I had some coolant in my trunk so I let it cool down and filled it up and drove home at normal temps. At home Im looking and when car is on with no radiator cap, lots of smoke come out of the resevoir. Also the coolant is bubbly and the level fluctuates up and down. Anyone know? Hopefully not a blown hea dgasket because it seemed to drive home fine after it happened? Thanks

i dont think its leaking coolant if you cant see it, like after you park it for a while.is your car smokeing white?did you notice a loss in power? those are a few of symtoms of a blown headgasket, along with coolant loss. i think your water pump could cause coolant loss too

TheYes just the other day when i started it up after been sitting there was some white smoke but none when im driving or anything.

EDIT: It seemed to drive fine after this occured thats whats making me wonder? I thought if you blew a head gasket the car would be like shot.

If your cap is off the radiator, let it run up to operating temp and look for circulation after your thermosat opens if you do, good water pump. Jessica

does your radiator fan work? I had a problem like that when I'd sit somewhere like at a light my temp would shoot up like a mofo. Just one more thing to check.

I will check the oil this afternoon, that should determine head gasket or not i think

Check to see if you still have that black plastic baffle under the nose of your car, it directs air up and into the front of the radiator. If it missing you will overheat rather quickly when driving any faster than 15 mph. It the thing we allways tage the curb with because it hangs so low.

Looking for water in the oil is no indicator of a head gasket failure. If the head gasket lets go between the cylinder and the coolant passage the coolant will never get into the oil. What if the intake manifold leaks coolant under the intake..now you have coolant in the oil..does that mean the head gasket is blown??? NOT
