  • Oil filter TOO small

    Hi,
I have a 1997 FireBird with a 3.8 liter engine. Like the car, hate the small oil filter. I use Royal Purple oil and want to extend my oil change periods because it is getting so expensive. All things the same in oil filters bigger would have to be better. Oil flow capacity. filtering, and oil filter life. Is there an adapter to make a full size filter work? One other thing, I don.t trust those anti drain back valves in oil filters. I would like to tun the filter down if possiible. To make all this worst an old mechanic friend of mine told me that the bypass valve opens up at about 60 or 70 anyway. On that little bitty filter I bet it opens up even soomer. I really want a high quality large filter. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Any PF52 filter such as Mobil 1 Oil Filter (p/n M1-201). This is what I use.

Is this a 1 quart filter? I have on that is a little larger than the one that is recommended.

theres no way it is a 1qt filter, you dont even need one that big, unless your car is like a racing car or something.. maby nitrous affects it, im not sure.

but the pf52 is what they put on the v8's, if a v8 can use the filter, im sure your much smaller v6 can also.

1 quart as in it holds a full quart?

Dude, you will be fine... IMO you are looking to much into an oil change.

I run my car alot harder then most. I just put normal brand name dyno juice, not even synthetic, I try to stick with AC delco filters. And just keep up with changing it ever 3k miles.

I know there is new fancy pants **** out there, but that does not mean that normal stuff still doesn't do the job.

BTW a better filter will not help you extend oil change life, it will allow more filtering, but the oil will still break down.

Its the additives in the oil that breakdown. I believe Royal Purple hAS NO VISGOSITY ADDITIVES TO ACHIVE 10 w-30 . ALSO THE ADDITIVES TO KEEP HYDROCARBONS IN SUSPESION ARE BETTER AND WILL LAST MUCH LONGER
THAN LESS EXPENSIVE OILS. tHE MECHANIC i AM BUYING MY OIL FROM RECOMEMDS 10,000 MILES BETWEEN OIL CHANGES WITH ROYAL PURPLE. IF YOU HAVE EVER HEARD OF BYPASS FILTERS, YOU CAN GET AS MANY MILES AS YOU DARE WITH JUST CHANGING FILTERS AND ADDING THE OIL YOU LOOSE CHANGING FILTERS. THE MECHANIC i USE RACES CARS AND BOATS AND SAYS THAT ROYAL PURPLE WILL MAKE YOUR ENGINE RUN BETTER.hE SAID HIS BOAT MOTOR WILL TURN MORE RPM'S WITH THE THROTTLE WIDE OPEN. tHATS WHY HE STARTED SELLING IT.

The pf-52 sized oil filter is as big as you can safely go [notice the location of the front swaybar].

-Blindly running 10,000 mile oil change intervals is FOOLISH the way most of us run our cars. I would only feel comfortable if I sampled the oil a couple of times at a lab, and got their okay to keep it in the engine longer.
-People who race cars and boats NEVER extend the oil changes in their motors. Unless they're retarded.
-Royal Purple isn't the only 30 weight synthetic oil that has little to no Viscosity Index Improvers.
-Your statement about bypass filtration is dangerously overgeneralized. You can run things in there a long time, assuming all the other systems of your car are in PERFECT condition [no slight coolant leaks or bad seals in the air filtration system]. Again, you can't do this without sampling the oil periodically. At least not safely. Especially in a GM engine...
-Claims of XX% more horsepower with a particular brand of oil over another brand of the same weight are WAY overstated. You might notice a little tiny more HP by going with a thinner weight oil. I think the Nascar guys qualify on a 0W-5 oil and race with a 0W-30 from what I've read.

TV also says I can save gas, and get 50% more hp with a tornado filter...

by normal motor oil and take the money you saved and use it on gas.

BTW do you find it funny the guy that sells the most expensive oil on the shelf is telling you how great it is and its the best thing for your car.

At my job I train my employees to sell as many of the most expensive things. Just what I do at my job. When they don't they get in trouble.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT PEOPLE WHO RACE CARS HAVE PERSONAL CARS TOO.
YOU ARE RIGHT ABUUT THE COOLANT, i HOPE ANY GRIME FROM ANY AIR LEAK WOULD BE PICKED UP BY THE OIL FILTER BEFORE IT GOT TO BEARINGS ECT. i DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU BUT IN REAL LIFE I'VE ALWAYS FOUND COOLANT LEAKS, OR FUEL LEAKS IN MY OIL WHEN i CHECK MY OIL. SUDING OR TOO MUCH OIL ARE A DEAD GIVE AWAYS. aLSO MOST OF THE THINGS i'VE READ ABOUT BYPASS FILTERS USUALLY DO RECOMMEND PERIOD TESTING OF THE OIL. i AM THINKING ABOUT GOING THE 10,000 OR AT LEAST THE 6,000 THA DEALERS ARE RECOMMENDING NOW AND KEEP PURCHASING THE HIGH QUALITY OIL.

a bigger oil filter isnt going to help you save gas.

you dont want to keep your oil longer.

oil gets dirty, a bigger filter wolnt make it cleaner. Even if an oil says it lasts for 15,000 miles, doesnt mean that, im sure that oil will be just as dirty as regular oil, dirt is what ruins the engine.

Your stock filter is fine. Just change your oil and filter every 3000-5000, and youll be just fine. if you want to protect your engine even more, change the oil sooner.

its been said before and i'll say it AGAIN: This is the scale of importance for keeping oil clean and your motor putting along happily:

                              1. Frequency of the oil changes
                              2. Doing the ancient indian "clean oil dance"
                              3. What brand the oil is and the filter size
