  • seafoaming my oil system...question

ok so i'm going to change my oil on sunday. my car has 80k on it just about and i would like to run a little seafoam through the oil system for the next 2 days just to clean some of the gum out, i'll be driving approx. 100mi before the oil change then.

question is: where do i add the seafoam to the oil system? do i pour it right into the oil system where the dipstick is, similar to adding oil after doing an oil change (i.e. remove dipstick, put funnel where dipstick was, add seafoam)? i'd like to run it through my car for the next 100 or so miles just for the heck of it.

reason i'm asking this is because the can's instructions are to add to your crank case but i actually don't know what a crank case is. i'm bad when it comes to car parts, at least the less obvious ones (like...tires...i know what they are, i think).

What year car do you have? As far as I know you don't add anything through the little dipstick. I guess you could if you wanted to. My car is a 2002 and I have an oil filler neck on my passenger side valve cover.

look a little further to the passenger side, like 4 inches away from the diptick, theres a cap there that says OIL, put your oil and seafoam in through there, and you can leave the seafoam in till your next oil change

FWIW I have heard people say never to run it in your oil system and if you do change the oil not long after...

People claimed they had problems associated with it, but then again thats the net. I just spend $3 on another engine flush stuff and use it before I change my oil and I stick to using seafoam for top engine cleaning.

has anyone on these boards seen any positive results from seafoaming their oil system, such as maybe better fuel economy or cleaner oil at the time of their oil change?

before i owned my car it was owned by an older woman so i know the oil wasn't changed on time every single time. the oil always comes out pretty black. my dad's car and my mom's car (dad's has around 80k and mom's has 40k), when the oil changes are done, the oil comes out amber, the same color it was when it went in-it's amazing, it's like it's not even dirty.

those cars have been taken care of very well, obviously. i'm looking to flush my oil system, get all that crap out so my oil isn't so black when it comes out. i doubt this car will ever produce like-new oil like my two parent's cars are, but it would be nice to clean up the system a bit.

any positive results seen on this board from seafoaming their oil? because if it's all bad, i'll save my 5 dollars on the seafoam.

              Re: seafoaming my oil system...question

im pretty sure all cars even ones from the 50's and 60's have a place where you put oil in the engine that isnt the dipstick.

now, tranny fluid is a different story

i've already found the proper place to add the seafoam. it's about 3-4 inches above the dipstick. it's the same inlet i use to add engine oil after i perform an oil change. what i am worred about is this specific post:

i'm wondering if there are truly negative effects of cleansing your engine oil system or if the positives far outnumber the negatives. i'd like to get all that black, soupy gunk out so my oil comes out more of an amber color after an oil change. my oil system must be very dirty. it comes out rather black (not thick and gummy and jet-black, just very dirty)

Well I don't know about that, I will have to look into it more because I put it in my oil every time my lifter starts sticking and it goes away almost imediately.
