fuel pump?

When I started up my car yesterday morning it had a very rough idle. It was like having a really choppy cam. First I thought this might be a result of the cold weather, but after running it for a while the idle didn't change. With the car in neutral sometimes it would start to die (idle would drop from 900 to 2-300) and after a quick rev it would go to normal idle. I put gas in it and now it runs fine. Any thoughts?

The last time you replaced the fuel filter was.....?

about 20k miles. The last time I changed it I don't think it needed it. I blew water through the old filter and the water was clean for the most part.
