Need information on a 1998 3.8 camaro swap... (putting another 3.8 in)

Ok i am looking for a 3.8 motor out of a camaro or firebird that i can swap into my 1998 camaro the easiest. I have found a 1996 3.8 out of a firebird and a 1999 3.8 out of a firebird. I heard that the 96 would be the easier of the swap even though i think i have to transer the intake off of my 98 to the 96 motor. I heard something about how the 99+ 3.8's use a different throttle set up or something. I am sure a 98 would be the easiest swap into another 98 but i can't find a 1998 camaro or firebird anywhere in a junk yard. Any info would be greatly appriciated.

I am not 100% sure, but I think that the 95-98 3.8's have the throttle cables, and the 99+ 3.8's have throttle by wire. If that gets confirmed, I'd say go with the 96 3.8 engine to install.

Well the reason I am looking for another engine is because my current engine has a rod knocking. Couldn't I Just transer the throttle cable onto the 99+ engine. What parts from my 98 motor will i have to transfer onto the 96 for it to work ?

96 and 98 are the same. You don't so much "swap the intake" as you just leave it alone. There's really no difference between them. 98-96 or 98-98 wouldn't be any different.

Switching to a 99 would involving replacing the upper intake manifold and TB.

So you are saying that the 96 would be a direct swap ? No modifactions would be needed ?

correct, a 96 would be a direct swap into a 98 car using the 98 pcm and wireharness.

Ok thanks guys i really appricate it. I am assuming my cold air intake and whisper lid off my 98 will not work. Any mods you would recommend doing to the 96 while it is out besides headers. Not looking for anything drastic. Just things to do to give it alittle more HP. I would guess change all the plugs and wires and such while it is out would be good too, correct ?

Like I said, just leave the intake alone. The intake itself doesn't have anything to do with the engine. The engines are set up the exact same way, so the intake will fit with no problems.

Won't I have to use the radiator from the 96 seeing as how the radiators were changed in the 98 models ?

Like we've said twice before, leave everything else alone. The motors are the same. Just swap the motor and you'll be set. ;)
