Its not a bad mod. The only real downside is that it will take longer for your car to heat up in the winter.
I got mine from thunderracing last year for like $11 shipped I think. You might be able to find them at autozone for cheaper. I would also suggest getting the manual fan switch if you go with the 160* thermo.Black 1996 3.8L Firebird A4
--------------------------
Custom CAI, Flowmaster Dual Exhaust, 160 Deg Thermo, BMR ShockTower Brace
JVC mp3 HU, two 12\" Infinity Kappa Perfects, Infinity 6.5\" components, JBL 600.1 & 80.4 amps
Pics

180* thermostat with a manual fan switch is the best, 160 is too much to be good for winter too, mine never hits above 175* with the fans on and the 180 thermostat and it runs on a dime. At 160* the engine is too cold and doesnt feel right to drive around town until it hits 175ish, 210 is too hot for my taste though. So.... 180* thermo, fan switch1997 Pontiac Firebird 3.9L

- TSP Dyno Tuned
- Bored 0.040
- ARP Rod Bolts / Head Studs
- Custom CAI
- Pacesetter Ceramic Headers / !Cat
- 3\" Catback w/SLP Firehawk Muffler
http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/649312

I have a 180* degree and no fan switch...
Just like cboney, it stays at about 170-175 when my car is moving. If I am sitting in traffic (good old southern CA) then it will go up to about 200* when the fans come on, but my computer was reprogrammed to make them come on sooner so yours will probably go to 220 before the fans are on. Anyway, it cools right back down to about 185 after the fans run...
I think 160 is too cold... there is also something to do with the car being in closed loop or open loop or something like that... I forgot the details. i'd go with 180* though. And you don't need to waste your money on a Hypertech... get a heavy duty Stant SuperStat from autozone or kragens, anywhere. You can drill your own hole in it too if you want, they work perfect for 1/3 the price.Sinister Six©
My \'95 Bird
I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship.
