Re: i need help im confused

i'm not gonna be a dick here, but i wanna give ya some honest advice. I've had my 3800 for almost 2 years now and i like it, its quick. but as far as racing, i've done the research for making it fast, and it wasnt pretty. If you wanna keep up w/ ur dad, you're gonna need a bigger motor. Everyone's heard the old anti-ricer slogan "Ain't no replacement for displacement". Thing is, if you got a 3.4L and with all the money you're gonna throw at it you get 500+ hp, you stilll have to realize that 500hp is alot harder on 6 pistons than it is on 8 because those two extra cylinders take some of the load. That, and the only way ur gonna get to 500 in that 3.4 is by boosting and juicing. If you put that much pressure in an engine, it's NOT gonna last very long, which means more time/money for repair. Its gonna be money you probably just WONT have. Also, trying to tune the engine to handle all that boost and juice takes a hell of alotta experiance. Just look around and see how many people on this forum are willing to go down on Viper04af to get him to tune their cars.
I dont mean to bust your dreams or anything, but i had the same idea dude. I looked into it, and for alot less time, money and hassle you can pick up a used ls1 or lt1, rebuild it, and for mine, i'm gonna stroke and put in a new cam and heads. It should put me to about 500-550. total cost for my project will be somewhere around 8k. breaks down roughly like this:

used engine w/ accessories and trans: about 1,500 (gonna find one w/ a blown connecting rod, thats y i think it'll be that low)
        rebuild: 1,000-2000
        stroker: 1500
        heads and cam 1500
other stuff (springs, fuel pump, radiator, throttle, etc.) 1500-2000

and thats with doing all the work except the rebuild myself. and thats for a v-8 too. keep in mind that with all that milage, you're gonna need to rebuild your motor too, you're gonna need new stuff like fuel pump and all that, you're gonna need a blower, you're gonna need juice, you're gonna need a tune, you're gonna need a new trans too cuz i guarantee that the one in there will die. you're gonna need just about as much stuff as I will but I'll be getting much more reliablility (especially cuz I'll still be N/A).
Don't get me wrong, it CAN (and has) been done... its just that if you're at ALL on a budget, you're better off going with an 8. Either way, you probably wont be driving it around either with gas prices where they are and how hard it is to handle that kinda hp on the street, so you'll need another car to get u from A to B. I just dont want you to do what i did and dump a bunch of money into this and then realize that you're just doing it the hard way and theres an easier way out.
If you're still gonna do it, you can't use the supercharged 3.8's from the grand prix's, they wont fit under the hood. I dont think that the N/A engines will go either, but i do know that alot of the parts are interchangable. You MAY be able to drop a turbo 3.8 from a GNX in there and with some fabrication, it'll work, but dont expect the ECM from that to like working with your other electronics.
Don't pooh pooh this advice. Think about it seriously and wait a while before you jump into it. Save up some money first and then decide if thats what you really wanna do. If your mind doesnt change, then i wish you the best of luck. Either way, post pics! :naughty:
