try cleaning the key off. or try your other key. i had this happen to me last week. i turned the key and everything came on but the car didnt start, the security light came on and stayed on. i went back inside got my other key and tried it and it started right up. i cleaned the other key off real good and retried it and it started right up.

By "cleaning off the key", he means take a rubber eraser and clean off the resistor chip in the key on both sides.

Basically the wires in your ignition/lock cylinder which contact that resistor [allowing the car to start] are probably getting worn out.

No need to remove the "pellet", just clean the metal parts.

This happened to my '98 Camaro about a year ago. Tried cleaning the key, getting another key made, replaced the battery, nothing worked. Finally we took it to our mechanic, and he found that the ignition computer was bad, had to have it replaced. Now it works great.

same problem with the 2000 malibu i have... i talked to a gm specialist and he told me to put the key in and turn it on... not start but on... and wait like 5 or 10 minutes until the security light goes off. For some reason when the computers get old, they kinda reset themselves. I'm not sure what it really is, but i never bought ignition comp... i haven't had the problem in awhile.

I think it was around $200, but I can't promise that's correct. The car was still my parents at the time.

well I found out what my problem was the wire split so they had to order a harness so keep the wires together..now they just have to replace the MAF..which I could do myself
