  • Yet another problem, water pump.

    1998 3.8
For a year now, i've sloowly been leaking coolent, and would just top it off. Sometimes it wouldn't leak for a couple months, but it would start leaking again slowly.

While i top'd off the radiator this last time, and put the cap on, i noticed some water dropplets trickling down the serpentine belt. Well i had to go to class. On the way home my temperature gauge shot up to the red line, i was close to my house so i turned on my heater and the temp guage went back down to 210.

I let the camaro cool down and opened the radiator cap, it was almost completly empty! ! I filled it back up with green coolent/water, and i heard dripping sounds. The leak was more obvious, definetly near the water pump leaking down the belt.
    eh

I assume i need to take off water pump so i can seal it properly, or do i need a new water pump?

I did search, and only found info for the 3.4 guides, no need to remove p/s pump. . .

9pm, i removed the air filter box, serpentine belt, but i'm confused now. .
Haynes: 1. battery disconnected yes, 2. remove serp belt, yes. 3. remove air intake duct, yes. 4. Detach the inlet and outlet hoses from the power steering pump. . . . they don't show a picture, and all i don't see any lines going to the pump or around the pump, i can see the tubes from the resiovor, do i just follow where they lead to? Can someone post a pic pointing where the inlet/outlet hoses are, because i'd really appreciate it :)

just follow the hoses. you'll need to get a new water pump more than likely.

you are trying to replace the waterpump correct? If so you just remove the belt and then unbolt the waterpump. Only a couple bolts and it is pretty easy to get at on the front of the engine. Replace it with a new one and new gasket (scrape old off engine before installing new one).

well yes i need to replace water pump, but the power steering pump is directly infront of it, i need to relocate it. Unlike the 3.4 engine. But it's all good, i know what to do now, i'll trace the resovior (sp?) hose lines down tomorrow morning, then i can get to the water pump.

          Thanks guys

i have a 3.8L and my P/S is not infront of my W/P. Its directly to the side.

yea I dunno what he is talking about. my waterpump is in plain sight and I didn't have to do anything to the power steering when I changed mine.

well the haynes manual sucks, why do they say remove p/s pump if it's not in the way? Less work for me, but yeah, so i'm just 1/2 done removing the water pump bolts.

all bolts off, but i don't have a rubber mallet/hammer to tap it off. If i use a screwdriver will it damage it?

edit, i got it off, sweet, scraping off the gasket suxed, it was stuck on there good. There was an orange discoloration so i sanded it off, it's shiny now. thanks
