Hanes recomend to change the "o" ring seal inside the pan at every transmission oil change. Some auto parts stores don't have it. Autozone have universal seals, but not for a specific model. They said it's very rare a customer ask for that seal, and most people do not change it, unless it's damaged. They gave me two options, one is to take the diameter of that seal and buy a universal one. The other option is to buy it from the dealer. I called them, and they do not sell it separated, it comes with the kit (filter & gasket). The kit is very expensive, around $38.00. I spent in auto zone $28.00 for the gasket, filter and Valvoline oil. My 3.8 has 70,000 miles. Do you recomend to leave the same seal. If not, what to do?

Hey guys! Have any of you changed the oil transmission? Do you have an idea on what I'm asking?

      Re: Seal Transmission

Are you talking about the seal for the tranmission filter?

When you buy the filter kit you get a filter, the pan gasket and the cup seal that is installed up in the transmission which the filter is inserted into.

Are you talking about the transmission oil-pan gasket, or the rubber ring that sits around the edge of the pan and goes between the pan and the transmission? If that's what u're talking about then u can use the old seal, but often it will break when u remove the pan. I'd recommend just getting the new gasket, but I recently changed the transmission pan on my 97 ford escort (the pan had rusted through and was leaking oil). After changing the pan I used 'gasket maker' instead of buying the 30 dollar gasket to re-seal it. It comes in a metal toothpaste-like tube for about 6 bucks at most auto-parts stores. Just apply it around the pan and it should do the trick. As long as you're not leaking oil you're good to go. If that's not what your talking about I have no clue.

Yeah! The ring was included in the kit. I was confused about that. I have already installed everything. It was tedious to extract the old seal. I think it was cause even using ramps, there's not much space to work and also it takes time to be careful in not wearing down and scratching the seal housing. Thanks guys.

Yeah, that seal is a real B***H to remove. Glad it worked out for you.
