Find a local shop to work with, for a few bucks they will evacuate your system, then you can do the repair work, take it back to them to reevacuate and refill. Won't cost too much ($100 when my buddy did it). Don't forget to follow the instructions with the compressor about the oil, and replace all the components (orifice, canister...).

        Re: A/C repair

Looks like i'll end up doing this myself (besides the evacuation and stuff). Anyone know where i could get some sort of instructions on this? Or is it pretty self explanatory (hook everything up just how you found it)? I was told at the shop that the parts that would be replaced are the compressor, orifice tube, and drier. I was planning on getting the parts from a junk yard, so just wondering if I should replace the entire system, or just those parts. Also, is there any way to tell whether the parts are in working condition, other than buying them new? And what would be a fair price to pay for those parts in good condition? I don't wanna get screwed too bad by the pick'n'pull.

So pretty much any suggestions from those of you that have done this before, and suggestions on what parts to get, and any help at all would be appreciated. Thanks for the help so far btw

if your going to do it your self, geting the freon out is the least of your worrys. you going to need a vaccum pump...such as this one, this is the same one i use....http://cgi.ebay.com/J-B-DV200N-7-CFM...QQcmdZViewItem and a set of gauges, freon-plan freon, not the leak sealent type, and a thermometer to figure your subcool and superheat.... heres one..http://cgi.ebay.com/FLUKE-51-THERMOM...QQcmdZViewItem

Can't I pay a shop to do all that stuff so I don't have to buy anything other than the parts?

Alright, I can get the compressor and clutch for $150. Not too bad. But I was told I would need to get the drier and orifice tube brand new. Are there any other parts that might have been damaged, or are those the only ones that could have been ruined? And where might I be able to purchase the orifice tube and drier (and any other parts needed)?
