O.K. Im new to the site but here goes I have a 1999 Firebird with a 3.8l V-6 When I put the key in the ignition it goes over to acc fine I get power and all is well untill I roll it on over to start the vehicle. It goes over and nothing and I get a flashing security light. I was told by the dealership that it was the Ignition cylineder and the wires from the theft deterent system had probably broken inside it and it would need to be replaced for a mere 400 bucks. Is there a way to circumvent the system I have the original key and can measure the resistance on the key, if so can someone post a diagram showing which wires to solder the resistor to, so i dont have to tear the steering column apart to find the color of the wires? Any and all help for a newbie would be greatly appreciated.

Re: theft-deterrent system
Easy killer... he's got more that 10 years on you in age. I don't think he's here to steal cars.
Our Tech Database might show you some things, I'm not completely sure.
I would call a lock smith that knows what he's doing. Getting past the PASS-KEY is an issue and something you really want fixed. I do know the dealers can bend you over for the keys, but for that little extra protection... It might be worth fixing it. If it was a simple mechanical problem (water pump, brakes, etc) I would NOT do a dealer.. I'd buy a book and do it myself.FirebirdV6.com/CamaroV6.com Administrator

Re: theft-deterrent system
If you do a search, this topic has been discussed with pictures and it works.
you really will want this fixed but hey, its your car.
Tealv6, your right about doing it yourself for easy stuff but I highly recommend GM parts. I have been at my dealer for about a year now and have seen so many cars come into my shop because an aftermarket part fails prematurely. then, we are suppose to deal with the O'reillys or autozone they got it from and bla bla bla just to find that their 1 year warranty is up and supposedly the customer swears it was a lifetime. remember this everyone, GM parts are warrantied for life. at least thats my shop so you guys should check out yours before you consider that cheaper part. also, weigh in the toe bill you will have to pay every 1-2 years because that 1 year part will most likely fail sooner than later.Last edited by BLLDOGG; 05-03-2006, 10:48 PM.
