  • 5W40 to 3,8?

Hi guys,i just want to ask if it is possible to use this type of oil in to my 2001 3,8V6 Camaro? It´ll be Castrol TXT Softec. And how many litres of oil is in there? Thanks much, Martyn - Czech Rep. Europe

well you "can" run it but I would stick to a 10w30 that is whats on my oil filler cap so that's what I use. Not sure how oil weights are regulated over there though but I would think 10w30 is pretty standard.

I would stick with the 10W30.

You wouldn't hurt anything running 5w-40.
The 0w-30 synthetic castrol would probably be a better choice year-round.

I don't remember the conversion exactly, but our cars hold 4.5 US quarts, and I think that's slightly more than 4 litres.

It will take 4.4 litres with the recommended oil filter.

The use of 5W-40 should be based on engine condition, duty cycle (how hard you run the engine), and ambient operating temperatures.

The Manufacturer recommends 10W-30 based on:
          1) an engine with little wear of average milage.
          2) average use of engine (not contiunous high output, like racing or long distance driving at very high power settings)
          3) engine operated in moderate temperatures.

A change in anyone of these conditions warrants a change in the viscosity.

I believe that 10W-30 was selected by GM at the onset because this engine (at the time) was of a higher output than the average 3.8 or 3800 V6 and that being a sports car it would be operated at higher power settings than a 3.8 or 3800 powered family sedan (like a non-supercharged Regal, or Bonneville where 5W-30 is the recommended oil)

For me, I'm presently running the recommended 10W-30, but I'm using synthetic. I will shortly (within the next 10K miles) be changing to a 10W-40 because my engine has 103K miles and is starting to make some valve train noise and is starting to burn a little oil. This thicker oil will lower the oil consumption and provide a better cushioning effect to all the parts that are wearing (will run quieter).

            I would use 5W-40 if:

            - I was operating in a cold enviroment (thin 5W viscosity for cold starting)
            and
            - I had mega miles on the engine and/or I plan on running engine hard.
