Hi im new to the forums. i have been having trouble with my 97. i took it autozone and had them scan it only to find a bad o2 sensor. I replaced the two before and after the cat. went to have code cleared and the light came back on within 30 miles. everytime i start it cold it surges about 400 rpms. lately i have been having a hard time starting it after it has been warmed up. it idles rough and runs rich. it has a ticking sound coming from under the hood (i hope it isnt a valve). sometimes it seems like i have lost power and sometimes the car has good power. i have replaced the plugs and wires (plugs are ac delco). please help!!!

What engine? How many miles? What was the exact code?

I would suspect fuel delivery. More specifically, a fuel injector stuck open or leaking. Could also be a bad fuel pressure regulator. These could cause the symptoms that you have. Check fuel pressure and leakdown rate.

It has 145,000 miles on a 3.8 liter. im not sure of the exact code but it something about the right bank heater circuit malfunction, code 161 i think. i think it might be a clogged cat also. thank you for your help.

I'm pretty sure it has a bad catalytic converter so I called the muffler shop and had an estimate done for a dual exhaust to be put on. I asked for the whole exhaust from the engine back. they quoted me around 850.00. is this a good price? i am forced to take it to a shop because i dont have the tools, space or knowledge to do the work myself.

thats about right for a custom exhaust shop, but it would be a lot cheaper if you bought a catback yourself, a cat, and had them install it, and you could just have them do the y-pipe. and im pretty sure it would all be alot cheaper than having them do it all.

also i dont recommend duals on a v6, but thats just my .02
