  • Failed smog check

I've only done suspension work to my car and I took my car for a smog check and it failed. It came with System too lean on Bank 1 and 2. So I took it to the dealership and they said it's the Fuel Pump and it's low on pressure. They want to charge me like $1400 to fix the Fuel Pump assembly. Oh the punch is that "it should stop that error. They're not even sure. What's a good approach to fix this problem? Thanx.

    it's a 2002 V6. Oh yeah I did a whisper lid on it

change the fuel filter first! see if that helps, do you have a ses light

Yeah the SES light came on, and I just changed my oil and the fuel filter about two weeks ago. The light came on about a month ago. I thought it was just the 45,000 miles check up. So I ignored it for a while. I guess it was not a good idea huh?

System too lean is a good indication of a fuel pump going out soon.

could be maybe a vaccum leak on the intake manifold?

I would make sure that if this doesnt fix it, that you pay for what does fix it in the end, not this 1400 BS. if they cant do that, go somewhere else. dont let yourself be screwed by crocks

            Re: Failed smog check

1400 bucks for a fuel pump, geez! I replaced mine myself and it definitely isn't a 1400 dollar job. Get some other shop opinions and have someone hook up a fuel pressure gauge and see what psi you are getting to the fuel rail.

              Re: Failed smog check

OK, here's the update. I went to some local guy and he checked out the fuel pump pressure and it was good. Then he switched out the O2 Sensor, but it's still not passing. I mean the SES light goes out, until the electronic system are restarted then it comes back on (I did the smog test and it showed up not ready and it needs to be driven around for a while). Someone else said that it could be the spark plugs. I guess I'll try that also the vacuum thing, but I don't know how to do that. So I'll have to go to someone to figure out how to do that. Thanx for all the help.

                Re: Failed smog check

This guy I took my car to get checked out here locally, he told me this "The really strange thing is that the throttle position at idle is at 7%, it should be at 0%....a 7% it (pcm) doesn t think its idling, so that is an issue, but I don t know if it would cause the lean bank fault." He checked everything out for the most part and switched out the rear O2 sensor, not sure if the front one is the problem or whatever. That's strange to me with that position idling at 7%. Crazy!!!
