  • Oil Level Sensor

I need some help here. About a year ago I was told the oil sensor on the side of the oil pan was leaking. I had a shop qoute me $30.00 to change it. I never got it done because the leak wasn't that bad. But today I took it to another shop and they wanted to charge me $150.00 to do it and said the oil pan had to be pulled to change this. Does anyone know if you have to pull the pan to change this oil level sensor? My oil pressure gauge doesn't show low but it bounces all around. I'm hoping if I changed that it would stop the gauge from bouncing around. It's annoying!

the oil level sensor has nothing to do with the oil pressure gauge and I don't believe that the pan has to come off to change the level sensor. If your oil pressure gauge is jumping eratically you may want to investigate you oil pressure sending unit, they are usually the cause of the problem you describe...of course there has to be enough oil in the engine also....

I'm going to change the oil pressure sending unit first and see if that helps. The oil level is fine. I check it all the time and never have to add any between oil changes. I am going to have to research the oil level sensor more, 2 places told me that I'd have to remove the pan, which if you look at it, you wouldn't think you would have to.

When I first purchased my camaro, I noticed my dipstick is quite twisted in shape unlike the dipsticks in Third Gens. Wish the 4th gen dipstick was not designed that way, just my opinion.

My sensor is going as well. gmpartsdirect.com has the sensor for $26. I plan on getting mine there. I was told by the dealership it just screws into the pan, but he didn't sound that sure when he told me that. They also wanted $50 for the same part.
