  • Power Steering Pull fell off, after new install

I replaced my 1994 3.4L V6 Camaro's power steering pump in the parking lot of Home-Depot, after the old one siezed on me and broke belt.

I drive 2 miles, and the serpentine belt falls off. Put it back on, and the power steering pump pully fell off so I just had the car towed home. We put the pully on using a rubber mallet and were in a hurry, so I'd bet it wasn't on all the way, and worked its way free.

    1. Is there a better way of putting it on? I got a pully puller, but it dosen't look like it's any good at putting it back on. Tommorrow, my friend and I are going to try a block of wood, and a real hammer. Any advice?

    2. I'm 90% sure, but might as well check, there isn't a bolt or anything similar to that, that keeps the pully on is there?

I am not 100% certain, but I would bet there needs to be a bolt on there. Engine parts don't usually snap together. Is there a threaded hole on the PS pump where you are snapping this thing on?

When I changed the water pump on my 3.4 I had to take the PS pulley off. The only way of putting it back on for sure is a pulley puller. There is no bolt or anything.

There was no bolt or anything when I took the pulley off, but like I said the pump had siezed on me, and the shaft had some out a little. I was thinking perhaps there was a bolt but it came off some how when the pump siezed.

But after looking at the inside of the shaft it dosen't seem to be threaded in any way. I'm fairly certain I just didn't get it on far enough even though the belt seemed to spin fine. I'll have to try it today with a block of wood and a hammer.

          :slap: <- me

OK, I stand corrected. Now I can rest easy tonight knowing I learned something today. :)

So I think the lesson here is that I shouldn't be trying to fix stuff in the parking lot.

I came home today and looked at old power steering pump, and it does indeed have threads in it so that one can use it with a pulley puller (pusher in this case.)
The pulley pusher worked like a charm, and I can tell I didn't have pulley seated any-where near good enough yesterday.

I took it for a quick ride around the block and it seems to be doing great.
I just have to replace my high pressure hose, because it's leaking like crazy after new pump was installed.

It looks easy enough to replace the high pressure hose, any advice or tips before I get started tommorrow? In other power steering pump threads I see stuff about replacing steering racks, why might I have to do this?
