  • how to replace your charcoal canister on a 00-02 camaro

ok well i know that there was nothing on these boards so since i did it i wanted to do a write up for everyone else. i did this by myself but it would be alot eaiser for 2 people. took me about 5 hours to take it apart. and 3.5 to put it back together. MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE THE LEAST AMOUNT OF GAS IN YOUR TANK AS POSSIBLE. i found the only place to find the canister is at a gm dealers and retails for $140.

tools needed would be, sockets, wrenches, breaker bar, flat head screw driver, tape(to label noses), 2 jack stands, floor jack and extentions.

#1 jack up the rear of your car.
#2 remove your rear wheels(don't have to but makes it alot easier.
#3 disconnect your exhaust(any point where it will come apart so the exhaust tips down. i disconnected mine from the headers.) don't let it drop to the ground yet.
#4 if disconnecting from the headers remove the bracket that supports the exhaust from the middle of you car.
    #5 remove your panhard rod.
#6 remove the bar on top of the panhard rod.
#7 there is 2 mini screws that connect that bar to a sheild that goes on top of the gas tank. remove them.
#8 remove the shield that goes over the gas tank.
#9 remove that shield that goes over the pass. side of the gas tank.
#10 jack up your rear axal to disconnect your rear struts.
#11 pull strut our of the holes, and lower your rear axal.
#12 remove the black plastic panel in your rear drivers side wheel well.
#13 disconnect the hose that connects your gas tank.
#14 drop your exhaust from the rear hangers.
#15 there are 2 metal straps that holds the gas tank up, your going to undo them little by little on each side so your tank comes down equal.
#16 once tank is off the claps your going to want to bend(not major bends) claps out of you way and and let the rear of your tank down first. slowly let the whole tank slide down, but not all the way.
#17 disconnect all the hoses and label them so you know where to put them when your putting everything back together.
#18 let the tank down the rest of the way.
#19 now the tank is out the canister can be replaced. there is little plastic claps on each side. on the side that does not have the hoses connected to them your going to want to sick a flat head screw driver down there and wedged the canister out.
#20 disconnect the hoses from the canister.
#21 put the new canister in by lower the end with the hose ports in first. and then wedge the other end in with a screwdriver
    #22 hook up the hoses.
#23 your going to want to start to put the tank back up. start with the front of the tank(the skinny side with the canister)
#24 hook up all your hoses.
#25 start to push the tank back up. not that easy. make sure that the hose for the tank goes back out to the wheel well.
#25 place the metal straps back in place and put the screws back in equally.
#26 put your exhaust back up.
#27 start your car to make sure all is well
#28put your axals back together(use the jack to make them the same high for easy install.)
#29 put bar that goes on top of the panhard rod back first.
#30 put the shield that goes over the pass side of the tank back
#31 put the shield that goes over the tank back
#32 put the panhard rod back.
#33 connect the tank hose to the filler.
#34 put the black cover back in the wheel well.
#35 put the wheels back on.
#36 lower your car, tighten your lugs.
