  • Pick my NEXT Mod

Well I recently broke up with my g/f of a 6year relationship and because of her I usually have NO MONEY. Now I'm saving up already and want to treat myself to a new mod for my car.

    Those of you who don't know I have a 02 Firebird A4, with the Y87 & W68 packages.

Currently have Whisper lid with K&N, SLP CAI, and Magnaflow catback exhaust system. (coming soon black C5 rims)

Things I'm looking at in the future are SLP 160 Thermo, SLP manual Fan switch, Trans Go Shift Kit (is this worth it?), Jet PCM Stage II chip, new driveshaft, and Redo injection with MSD Dis 4, new coils, wires and plugs.

Not sure if I should complete my exhaust or not by taking out the manifolds and putting in headers and a high flow cat. I hear the CIA Headres are the best but no matter what you will have leaks and exhaust issues. Might not be worth it and some say to stick with stock and just do induction and catback which I have.

I really want FASTER acceleration right now. Better take off.

So speak your point of view and give me your 2 cents. or if you want to contribute more I take the money you fold too

      I don't think you have a need for a DIS4 right now.

I would do plugs, wires, coils, thermo, basic tune-up stuff.

How many miles on the car?

Also Aluminum driveshaft is un underestimated mod, athough it doesn't "add" horsepower it WILL give you a noticeable gain as it reduces rotating mass and should give you .1 in the 1/4 mile. Also gives quicker acceleration and teh SOTP gain.

I agree with everything you've said here. That's what I would do. (Refering to Nachius)

I have 42K miles on the car right now. I was also thinking to start working on the ignition but if i'm going to get new coils, wires and plugs why not use the DIS 4 as well?

With the few mods I have would I actually notice and feel the difference with a new Drive Shaft?

Get a torque converter, drag radials, and some 3.73's.

Torque converter.. .Hmm you got me thinking now... I want to keep my car street legal but a Torque converter and a new illum DS together could make a nice difference right?

As for the gears I have 3.42's stock and figure it wouldn't be worth upgrading to 3.73 gears.

Not to mention people recommend not to go with 3.73 or 4.11's unless you have a manual.

What model torque converter and illum driveshaft should I look at with that being said?

for the driveshaft just search ebay for a used LS1 driveshaft. only 10 pounds and is one piece compared to the stock steel 2-piece. also check out z28 forums for sale sections. i would try ls1tech.com, camaroz28.com to start. i see them a lot on there

                  Re: Pick my NEXT Mod

Torque converters are pretty expensive even if you are isntalling them yourself which requires dropping the transmission.

Precision Industries, Yank, Edge Racing all make converters for our car.
They range around 500-800 dollars, but give you a BIG off the line gain and can gain .5 or more in the 1/4 mile.

If you already have 3.42s like you mentioned gears would help a bit, but that once again is an expensive install if not doing yourself. Going from 3.42s to 4.10s will reduce gas mileage, but could net you .4 in the 1/4 mile maybe better?

Any aluminum driveshaft from any 3rd or 4th gen f body will work and are SIMPLE to install. You can find them used for $150 or under sometimes.

Lastly the DIS 4 is expensive for what it does, our ignition systems are pretty efficient stock and unless you start getting to where you need assured spark or timing retard there is no real NEED for a DIS4 system in my opinion.

Nachius: Well you have me sold on the Aluminum Driveshaft. Can you do me a favor and point out a good brand? i'm assuming a 3" right? Not looking to break my wallet too badly but I want something good. Would I notice a good gain on acceleration with that alone?

As for gears i have the Y87 package so I'm supposed to have 3.42's but never got under and checked to be sure.

Just seems with teh DIS 4 that everybody is upgrading to it with coils and all. It is a lot of the Dis 4 and 2 coil packs and plugs and wires to accomadate the upgrade.

I like guys like you that save first and search. You will do very good mods. I'm sure. If you gonna save pretty much, and after doing basic mods, Why not going on a supercharger, or on nitrous (less expensive than supercharger)?

                            Re: Pick my NEXT Mod

Thanks Boris lol. I always try to save up and get the best mods at the time done to my car. Rather than just getting what I can afford at the time. Eventually I do plan on putting in a Turbo or SC. a Turbo would be better cost wise and you can squeeze more power out of it with upgrades to that.

I did a search on ebay and found this

                            http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/98-02...spagenameZWDVW

So I guess the LS1 Fbodies came stock with a 3" illuminumn Drive Shaft because it says it came from a WS6. Is it better to buy used or new for the price break?

Also do you think it will really made a difference on my acceleration that i can noticed and feel? Especially from a stop?
