  • need help, car quits while driving..

ok I have a 2000 pontiac firbird V-6....Heres the problem, the car is in great running condition low with 110,000 freeway miles, it runs like a charm...Ok randomly driving the car it will just die, no check engine light or any thing, temperature doesnt affect it, it will just die randomly when ever its drivven, it could do it 5 minutes into a drive , it might not do it for 5 days, it just happens when it feels like it, i put a scanner and got no codes.. and when it dies it wont restart it turns over but doesnt start, you have to wait, mabye 5-10 or even it will start right away, it will start when it feels like it..we think its get sprak but no fuel after it dies..and its probally not a sensor because it will show it in the code scanner, or the computer would tell. we think it could be a fuel issue, but it does it randomly keep that in mind, in any condition when ever it feels like it. anyone have suggestion where to check or has anyone else had this problem
    thanks in advance

maybe the fuel filter,, maybe. You say you have spark, do you have air? Check your electrionic throttle body next time it quites, and make sure its opening. I had a 99 that would not start once is a while, turns out the throttle body was getting stuck closed. Try taking it off and cleaning it.

my car will run with out the battery. i found that out when my delco battery terminal broke off. only walmart batterys for now on! Yes, check that throttle body, next time it wont start, do two things. Next time it wont start use a flash light and look in and see if its stuck shut, if so you can tap the bottom of the plate and reopen it. If you have someone with you have then turn the car over and try starting it and you go to the rear and see if you can feel air comming out of the exhaust. Also you can get a throttle body cheap from a junk yard, change yours and see what happens. If you cant find one, i have one off a 2000 firebird, it needs cleaning, and ill do it for you for a fee. but it works.

That happened to me when I used a different brand of gas in my car, went from Mobil to Exxon and the whole trip on Exxon was horrible. I got a service light, and the car would die randomly then it would shift very oddly almost as if you launch it. Used up the tank of gas and put Mobil in, light and all symptoms went away almost immediatly.

Take off your battery terminals again ad make sure there is no corrosion in them.

Curious no codes, but it sounds like the crankshaft position sensor to me.

Yea no codes..Ive heard somone else mentioned that it could be the crank postion sensor...How would I check that...And there is no corrision on the battery cables...so im trying to narrow it down, its not the cable, no codes, not the fuel filter...how do I check into the crank position sensor?

Re: need help, car quits while driving..

Well the good news, if it is the sensor it might just be dirty like mine was. Dirt, oil and gunk had covered the fins so it would get intermittent readings causing my car to shut off while driving or I would not be able to start it sometimes.
The bad news is that it sits behind the Harmonic Balancer and there is no way to reach it unless you take the harmonic balancer off.
Its not that hard to do but it is a PITA. After that take the plastic ring shield off and there it is.

Re: need help, car quits while driving..

I've seen a problem like this before. A few years ago my friends 71 chevelle did the exact same thing. It would randomly stall with no warning, then would have to wait around to restart the car. After countless hours of troubleshooting, we decided to check the fuel tank. Turns out there was a ping pong ball in the tank. Check the gas tank, see if theres any foreign matter floating around that would make it's way to the gas line.

I am almost 95% sure that it is a problem with your Ignition Control Module (ICM). Why do I know this? The same exact thing happened to me on another car. I do not remember the repair costs as it has been 3 or 4 years ago. It seems to me the ICM part cost was under $50, then add on whatever they charge to replace it for you. You are correct though. This usually would not show up on a diagnostic, being that it was not something that malfunctioned all the time. It was purely random whenever the car chose to stop. Highways and downtown stoplights were always the most fun. Good luck.

ICM's do seem to have heat-related problems when they are ready to die. My last car would have terrible ignition problems when it warmed up. Turned out the ICM was worn out, and would start acting up as soon as it got hot.

harm balancer is kinda hard to take off

how the hell does a ping pong ball get in a gas tank?
