The AC pulley on my 97 3.8 started making this really bad whining sound. You can hear it over the sound of the engine. It lookes like the pulley is 2 pieces or something. When I turn the ac on the whining isn't as bad but is still loud, when the ac is off it's really bad! I think this is what it looks like, but on mine It seems like there is something else on the end that is making the noise. It's hard to tell. Anyone had this problem? I can't even figure out how to get the pully off.
The AC clutch (pulley) is bad. It's a pain to get it off, you need special tools and it's very involved. Plus, the clutch costs almost as much as a rebuilt compressor complete with clutch. My advice is replace the entire compressor and recharge your AC.

Figured it would be something difficult and expensive. I will take it by a shop this weekend and see what the charge is for that. Everything is just going bad on this car. The hood won't stay up without a prop, all shocks need to be replaced, headliner is hanging down, just replaced water pump and that stupid intake elbow. Transmission starting to shift harder also.
Im pulling the whole AC system out of my car. A new (rebuilt) compressor was put in about 2 years ago. works good, but I never run the AC. I'll sell it to you if you need a new compressor.

How many miles are on it? I've had a lot of problems with mine between 40,000 and 65,000 miles but for now it seems like everything is working ok. They aren't the most reliable that's for sure.

My car has 123,000 miles. I got it with 50,000 In NOV 2001. Within the first month I had it, things started going wrong. Spark Plugs going bad every couple months, power window motors going bad every year since I've had it, stupid blinkers going out every month it seems. Nothing major yet, but just a bunch of little things that are aggrivating as hell. Like having to get under the car to change the front turn signals. The power steering pump needs to be replaced for the 2nd time also. And now the stupid AC clutch is making all kinds of noise. Atleast the thing is paid off though.
Realized today that while driving the noise goes away when the rpms go over 2k, what is up with that? Why would the noise just go away once the rpms get over 2k? I don't get that at all.
I thought about doing that, and I knew a guy who could have fixed it as a side job for me. But I would have had to work around his schedule and I wouldn't have had a warranty or anything. I didn't want to spend the money, but I wanted to get it fixed today. This pretty much makes my mind up on keeping the car also, atleast for another year or so.
