Is there going to be a big gain if i just get ported heads and intake even though i have a stock cam and internals?I can get a set of ported heads for about $300. Would it be worth it?

    Re: Ported Heads

porting and polishing heads can gain (6-8 hp) if the intake and exhaust are ported and (8-14 hp) if you also had the valve guides ported so a little gain but not that much, im porting mine right now and will be posting flowbench #'s soon

      Re: Ported Heads

if the port job is good it is definitely worth it. If it is a crappy port job it could hurt ya, porting takes a lot of practice to perfect. $300 is cheap for heads and intake ported and polished

How long is a heads and intake swap going to take? The guy who has them is our local vocational teacher he said he would guarentee them to work on my car.he said they had been flow checked and all the runners are equal. He is not much of a chevy guy so he doesdnt need them.

          Re: Ported Heads

head/intake swap takes me about an hour to get off, hour to get back together.
For you I could seeing it taking as much as 5 hours to get off, 8 hours to get back together. But who knows? It all depends on your tools and your experience.

use a big breaker bar like a torque wrench on the head bolts
and spray PB blaster on the exhaust manifold bolts if you have to

Use a breaker bar, not a torque wrench. Mine (although a small, cheap one) snapped when we applied to much pressure using it as a breaker bar. Well, didn't snap, but the gearing broke.
