  • SES-can't get code

I have a '94 Firebird and my SES is coming on. It usually happens when I'm driving at about 3500RPM or better and then I take my foot out of the go pedal. You know, like when you are going downhill or approaching a stop light. The thing is I can't get the code out of my diagnostic port. If I use the jumper cable I get nothing. Not even the CODE 12, which means the diagnostic is active. A scanning tool was used without success. Anyone with this problem? Please help.

I'd guess it's your EGR or in your case lack thereof. No EGR causes the computer to read a rich condition from the oxygen sensors.

I had the same symptoms. I bet it is the EGR. The only way to pull the codes is with the scanner. The cheap unit from Autozone or a paperclip does not work. The guy at www.autocheckup.com usually has some refurbished units cheap.

Now before you drop the 160 for a new EGR, remove the tube from the EGR to the intake, soak it is carburator cleaners for a few hours then scrub the heck out of the inside. I found that once I replaced the EGR I still had problems....usually the solenoid 2 and 3 codes. The 2 bends in the tube promote carbon buildup so if you clean it you may be OK.

I would recommend pulling the codes, just in case it is another problem.

I have been working on my EGR for a while and finally heard about cleaning the tube and it solved my problem. If you have ang Q's drop me an email at jsandler@excite.com
