When my car is idling, the rpm's bounce between 500 and 1300. If I let it sit long enough, it just dies. If I rev it, it is fine. It just started doing this the other night and I have no idea why. I removed my MAF screen, but I dont think that has anything to do with it. It hasnt thrown any new codes yet either (still shows the P134, buts thats old news).
I also noticed extra carbon build up in my exhaust tips. This means its running rich.
Is is running way too rich and bogging itself down?

That could be possible, check your o2 sensors. Pull you spark plugs and take a look at them see what they look like that can help alot. You might have any series of problems, and without an engine code its a bit harder to narrow down. It could be something as stupid as a o2, map, throtle postion, crank position sensors. Too much comes into play with running rich, I don't know however exactly what can cause the engine to rev itself, unless the computer is trying to do it to compensate.
Edit~ Just saw the Nitro system, how are your rings and gaskets holding up? I know compression loss can cause some issues like that also, as far and dieing and running sparatic
well , if you have the reason than leave it out.
Conditions for Setting the P0134:
The system voltage is greater than 9 volts.
The engine run time is greater than 70 seconds.
The fuel system is operating in Closed Loop.
The AIR and the Catalyst diagnostics are not active.
The engine coolant temperature is greater than 48°C (118°F).
The HO2S signal voltage is between 350 mV and 550 mV for 57 seconds.

Wow, could be alot of things. Thanks for looking that up, I really appreciate it.
I am taking it to a mechanic on Friday to have them take a look. I will have them look over EVERYTHING under the hood and make sure everything is in good shape to run the nitrous too.
put your maf screen back in and everything will run fine again. Our angle tb's need that screen in there to idle and run correctly. I installed a dry setup on a buddy of mines 97 camaro and left the screen in. Everything works fine.

I kept the screen. I'll put back in first thing tomorrow. I was reading somewhere that people were having problems with icing and dry n2o systems. I never thought it would mess up the idle, course I forgot about the angled TB too.
Whats with the screen back in stuff??? I have cut the screen out of almost every single MAF sensor I have ever had in any car I started to build. The screen is only really there as a last second block for any crap that may get past your air filter so the $300 sensor doesn't get destroyed. You shouldn't have any problem if you remove it, as long as you don't ruin the sensor in the meantime.
I have pulled from out of every single 3rd gen I have worked on and thats nearing 30 of them, and mine, never seen an issue by it. Unless there can be a slight issue because of the way the air hits it and slows and turns or what ever the case may be.

The maf screen isnt there to block anything, its there to smoothen the airflow over the maf sensor.
My 97 especially needs the maf screen cuz it has an angled TB which your 3rd gens dont have so they have less of a problem with it.
I was reading the "nitrous Bible" and it says that a rough idle could be due to a leaking vacuum so I will check that as well as reinstall the maf screen.
Hey everyone! I've been trying to remove my transmission for two days now! I need to replace the clutch. Only thing I've got left holding the transmission...
Hello, so I changed the front bearings on the bird and the ABS inoperative light came on. I made a mistake of not removing negative battery cable. Now...
I usually have to double, triple my headlight switch for them to come up on my 97 Firebird. I cleaned all connections. Could it be the headlight switch...
